SATA 320g HDD The Number Of Disks is not adequate to create a RAID!!!

Just bought a new SATA western Digital 320gig HDD (WD3200js)

Now im new to SATA drives but not new to installing HADD's and this is doing my nut in.

right from the start

Took out my 2x hdd IDE HArd drives
Replaced it with sata HDD hooked up SATA Power and connected to SATA 1 on the Motherboard.
Restarted pc
didnt recognise the hdd went back into bios had a check about everything seemed fine.
Changed to boot from cd i have a original copy of win98se which started up formatted it (not sure why it was blank) but said QUIT ONE OR MORE MEMORY - RESIDENT ON CONFIG.SYS ETC.
So Tried the xp pro disk
Then said THE NUMBER OF DISKS IS NOT ADEQUATE TO CREATE A raid!!!.
(at this point it is recognising the drive but i cant access anything in the little menu)

Ive been trying to read forums some say theres something in the bios to turn off IDE or RAID....i cant find these on my bios...some say flashing the bios (dont understand why i should do that) some others say about drivers for the drive..

It said press f6 when doing the xp installation to install a third party raid driver which i have done to still no luck

my specs of my pc are as below

Welcome to HWF :)

Enter the BIOS by holding down the Delete key while turning on the computer. You should now see a settings screen (blue background with white and grey text). Look at the different sections for a setting where you can set the SATA to RAID or regular (don't know the exact name of the 2nd option). Apparently the SATA controller is set to use RAID, and needs to be set to the other option.
 
cheers buddy thats what ive heard but ive looked in my bios..and i cant find anything atall..the settings for the HDD are only Auto LBA or CHA i think it was..i cant find anything saying a word about SATA or RAID in my bios...dont spose you know where it would be, and if its def there
 
right ive had another look in my bios and theres nothing jumping out at me atall..ive made the miss's write everything down so i can copy here so you can tell me where it is..or not is as the case maybe.

THATS everything i can see the raid or SATA options would be and as you can see THERE ISNT 1! unless i really am going mad...get them brain cells clicking chaps..coz this is doing my nut in

no in a word

i turnt off all the IDE controls in the bios apart from my dvd/rw...and it finds the sata drive press tab to go to the little bios for the sata...but i cant access any of it
and in the corner it says The Number Of Disks is not adequate to create a RAID!!!

Given the importance of backward compatibility between SATA 1.5 Gbit/s controllers and SATA 3 Gbit/s devices, SATA/300's autonegotiation sequence is designed to fall back to SATA/150 (1.5 Gbit/s) speed when in communication with such devices. In practice, some older SATA controllers do not properly implement SATA speed negotiation. Affected systems require the user to set the SATA 3 Gbit/s peripherals to 1.5 Gbit/s mode, generally through the use of a jumper,[6] however some drives lack this jumper. Chipsets known to have this fault include the VIA VT8237 and VT8237R southbridges, and the VIA VT6420 and VT6421L standalone SATA controllers.[7] SiS's 760 and 964 chipsets also initially exhibited this problem, though it can be rectified with an updated SATA controller ROM

Now I need you to take out the hard drive, and look at the back if you see a group of 4 metal pins. If this is the case, you can fix the problem immediately. Otherwise you'll need to buy an SATA controller. If you can find these pins, look if there's a black cap seated on two or these pins. If not, look at the packaging of the hard drive if there's a cap included. Otherwise you'll need to go to a computer- or electronics store, and ask for a Jumper.

Now use that cap to connect the two pins on the left, like in this image:

Then put the hard disk back.

the only 4 pins i have are the power pins ive got the sata power cable, the sata cable to the motherboard and the 4 pins for the old type of power....

oh and 8 little pins betweenthe power and the sata power and mother board lead

any of them? coz this is really my last go then this 320 is going on ebay lol
 
I found the jumper settings for your hard disk. These are here. You should set it to OPT1 (the lowest in the picture). The jumper should be connected to the 2nd pair to the left.

right im on my pc with my original IDE hdd... and the sata as a slave..its showing as 298gb.
i tried the SATA on its own..didnt get recognised....press tab to goto the sata bios, still the same cant access any of it...obviously ive got it as a slave now...but didnt get recognised in the post screen, and again cldnt access the sata bios...

unless im doing something really daft i think thats my lot...any1 wanna by a 320gig sata hdd lol
 
Bach..thank you for all your help buddy youve tried ya hardest and im sure it probably would of fixed others SATA drives.. but im afraid no such luck with mine...

I'm sorry that I can't help you any further.

There is one thing that you could try. Look at the motherboard if there's a writing about the brand and type of the motherboard. You could then search on the website of the motherboard manufacturer for an SATA driver. If you can find it, put it on a floppy disk (read instructions first), insert the floppy disk in the computer and boot from the Windows XP CD-Rom. Press F6 when you see it at the bottom of the screen. Then choose VIA VT8237 in that list.

That's the only other solution that I can find.
 
today i got a same prob with lavish...
its take about 4 hours to solve that prob.. for lavish, maybe this advice will help u... or maybe not, because this is what i do... in IDE devices configuration u'll see option like this

on chip SATA
SATA Mode (IDE,RAID)
PCI IDE BusMaster
Onchip IDE Channel l0
Onchip IDE Channel l1
IDE Prefetch Mode

so, i've try make some change to SATA Mode... (got 2 option there.. RAID n IDE) ... n from RAID, i change it to IDE... n enabled all other option.. thats all... dont forget to save all setting u've made...

i hope this advice will help u... if not maybe to other ppl who got same problem with us... ty..
