sata drivers

hi,

when you insatall an os an a sata drive, do you need to install and sata drivers in order for the drive to operate properly??

thank you in advance for any help.
 
and also,

if the sata drivers are not installed, what effect would this have on the syatem ( if you just installed xp without installing the sata drivers)

Sometimes when you install WinXP, it will want the SATA drivers because it can't recognize a HDD in your system, so you simply insert the SATA drivers at the text portion of the install and hit f6 and select the driver you wish to install. If it turns out windows installed without the SATA drivers, you won't notice any problems whatsoever because they'll be recognized as a mass storage device.

how would the drive act if the actual motherboards sata drivers had not been installed?
 
It would act like any other drive. It would work. Performance wise, you wouldn't notice a difference.
 
That's exactly right.
I've had my SATA drive for a while now and i never installed the chipset drivers for it and it works fine. As a result, all you'll get is the 'Safely remove hardware' icon in your taskbar. Other than that, they work like they should.
 
how do you install sata hard drives ?mine would not recognise, so installed as an ide, 2nd sata 2 drive recognised in bios, just cant install !!!! help !
 
You will need a floppy disk with the SATA drivers on them. Early on in the Windows 2k/XP setup, it will ask you to hit F6 if you have any storage controllers to add. If you missed that part, then it won't ask you prior to the formatting stage. Your motherboard should've come with a floppy containing these drivers.
