Serial ATA vs IDE hard drive

Can you connect any hard drive via Serial ata? or do you need to buy a specific hard drive in order to connect via serial ata? The reason i'm asking is because my friend's motherboard only has one floppy and one drive ide slot, limiting multiple drives and storage to 2 drives. The motherboard we have is this one HERE if anyone knows how to put more than just 2 drives, or how to connect a regular hard drive via SATA please help. Thank you. :confused:
 
You can add a PCI SATA controller, and then you will have SATA capability. Then you'll need a SATA hard drive, which is about the same price as a regular PATA drive.
 
That motherboard has 4 SATA ports, courtesy of Intel's ICH5, which is paired with the 915/925 chipsets.

Technically, yes, you can connect any ATA hard drive to a SATA port, but PATA drives will require an adapter. The problem with these is one or both of the following: data corruption and slow transfer speeds.

In your case, you'd be much better off getting a SATA hard drive, since that motherboard has native support right off the bat.
 
ouch! we should have bought an SATA hard drive. where can we find an adapter? As long as its not expensive, my friend wouldn't mind buying it. Otherwise we'll be forced to return his hard drive and get an SATA hard drive.
 
Return it and enjoy the benefits of 150mb/s transfer rate! Also i read in a page about useless computer hardware... a SATA cd drive!
