SMART failure predicted on Hard Disk 2: ST9120821AS-(S1): HP Pavilion dv8000?
My laptop is nearly 2 years old and out of warranty. I have 1 physical hard drive (120GB), but HP had 20GB partitioned off as a second drive for automatic backup. Last year I reformatted my HD and put Vista on, however, I was unable to delete the backup partition and so now that portion is completely dead, unformatted and unusable. I am slightly familiar with SMART errors but given the error message, I am assuming the error is on the second (dead) HD. Any suggestions????

Also, a file within my antivirus program went corrupt and so I am unable to do a complete backup of my primary HD, and I don't have Vista install discs anymore so I would really like to avoid having to set up a new HD and salvage this one if possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!

firstly SMART is usually accurate, your HDD is as you correctly identified as 120 GB, go to Seagate's web site & download Seatools & run it as described, hopefully it will either fix the error or it will give you an error code

BTW: how brave are you ?

fairly brave... and all Seatools tells me is SMART test failed. And I've decided it says HDD2 b/c it's plugged into the 2nd SATA port....i think
