My son has a Compaq Presario C700. It is out of warranty and has some startup issues. Sometimes when he boots up all he gets is a black screen and a cursor arrow. He has to hold down the power button to restart and sometimes several times. Before I pay money I thought I'd pick the brains of some of you experts online first. Any ideas?

That's pretty tough to go on to be honest, since the details are pretty spartan. It could be a problem with your OS, hardware, or both. I'd run a pass with Memtest86+ overnight and make sure the RAM's intact, as it's one of the more sensitive components in the system. If you come out the other side with zero memory errors, try reinstalling the operating system. If he's running Windows, it's the most insecure and unstable OS out there, so just about anything could have happened.
