hi, whenever i try and open (or even point with the cursor) at a particular folder my pc restarts. then i get the blue screen with this error message: A problem has been detected and windows have been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adaptors. Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options, and then select safe mode. Its possible that your HDD has a bad sector wherever that folder is! ,go to your HDD manufacturers website and they should have a HDD scanning tool, this will determine if infact you have bad sectors! But this seems unlikely that it would cause your computer to crash!
thanks for replying. the funny thing is i can access all other files/folders in the relevant drive. it also restarts when i try and open Add/Remove Programs!
hi m8 it cud be spyware thats causing you the problem. try downloading spybit search and destry free from www.downloads.com and adaware from the same place. if u havent got any anti virus software "avg" from griesoft is a good option this can also be downloaded from the same place. After running these if there is no change try defragmenting your hdd. If none of these work and you have a windows 98/xp start up disck and boot of it and type scadisk first and press enter and after that test is done type chckdisk and run that test these tests tests for bad sectors in the hdd they arent as efficent as the one stated in the post above from ur hdd manufactorer however are good to fall back on it you cant idenify your drive hope this helps Dave
Btw i 4got to mention that overheating can also cause this u cud check inside ur pc for alot of dust!! Dave
i assume HDD is hard disk drive? i don't know who the manufacturer of that is! would it be the same as the make of the PC itself?
yes a HDD is a hard disk drive! No it will not be the same as the PC name, what pc do you have (please include manufacturer and model #)? EDIT: i doubt its a virus or spyware as blue error screens usually indicate a hardware error!
thought so! you won't have heard of it but the make is Carillon and it's an AC-1 Carillon are PC's designed with music composition in mind but are still PC's with windows and everything. i have two hard drives (C and D is one and then a big one E). I've just asked them and the HDD manufacturer is Seagate. apparently they have a system hardrive check download so i'm going to give that a go. he said if that doesn't work then i may need to delete all the partitions (whatever that is). will let you know how the seagate system check thingy works! ever heard of Seagate?
Yes seagate is a well known brand but also known for failing alot! If the customised scanner doesnt work or comes up with no errors just double check with seagate's "SeaTools" !
