Hi, whenever i try and open a particular folder (or even point to it using the mouse cursor), my computer restarts. Then, I am greeted with the blue screen which has this error message:

A problem has been detected and windows have been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adaptors.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options, and then select safe mode.

    Technical information:

    *** STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xF8A26459, 0XBAF47B58, 0X00000000)

    Can anyone help??

Looks like this thing is a rootkit. :( See this thread for a description. As for your error message:

"[vdmt16.sys was] added by the Troj/Haxdoor-CN rootkit infection. This file is installed as system driver and is used to hide processes, files, and registry keys from being seen."

With a trojan this bad, my recommendation is to forego the attempt to purge the thing and simply reformat/reinstall your OS. A system can no longer be considered trustworthy after a rootkit infection.

    All the best,
