 why would someone program a system to solve a stupid rubik's cube:doh:

It's not stupid, and there are reasons. Imagine the difficulty in not only developing a program to solve the cube, but along with mathematical proof also find the best solution.

Rubiks cube is simply another game which computer scientists and mathematicians try to completely "solve" given any starting position. Who knows, maybe doing so might teach us something new.

like what, it was just a game, analyzing how to solve it makes no sense, maybe we should lock Paul Daniels in a padded cell to discover how he solved it by throwing it in the air & it landing in his hand solved / completed

BTW: it was only a game

The aim of projects like these are not so people can solve their rubik's cube they've been storing away. It falls under computational mathematics. You might think that maths is a waste of time, but others would disagree.

For example, in programming a checkers program, the concept of the bitboard was invented. Nowadays, GNU chess uses the bitboard concept.

You might ask, what was the point in building a massive particle accelerator just to prove that a subatomic particle called the W and Z boson existed? Well it was required according to quantum theory and so proved it correct, the uses of these things may not be so obvious at first glance.

thankies Addis, i didn't think about it like that, i just thought it was a waste of time, guess i'll have to actually have to think before posting some stuff, thanks again Addis[ot]is it me or am i thankful to you for a lot of stuff[/ot]

If some one is throwing around subatomic particles, i don't care who you are, i think that there is going to be something pretty interesting in all that, that and they had a reason behind doing that. Oh coarse math is important, its used in pretty much everything, but to be honest, i don't think anyone is doing this do cure cancer, its more of a hey, look at this code i made, i bet i can make it do this, and in turn some one will be like wow, i bet i can use that do make a robot arm move, or something. But most likely, its just going to solve a rubik's cube and the person who wrote all the code will be like Yeah, i did it.
