I have a " asus p4c800-deluxe" motherboard in a computer I built. I want to switch it out for a Abit motherboard. The hard drive that is connected to the asus motherboard has winxp sp2 on it. I would like to know if I switch out the asus motherboard will i have to reinstall winxp sp2 on the same hard drive. If I have to reinstall winxp sp2 on the same hard drive will I have to buy another copy of winxp sp2. Or can I use the one I have. Can there be a problem

If somebody can answer my question please help.

Note: The only thing that I am switching out is the motherboard. Putting everything else back into the computer.

    Thank You

That depends if it's the same chipset or not. If it's not the same chipset, you're going to have some problems going to the Abit board. Windows doesn't like having hard drive controllers switched out from under it, and while it can be done, it's quite a hassle to do.

With the liscense for XP, as long as it's the retail copy, you can legally have it installed on one PC. You're only changing one part of the system, which I don't think is enough to have to reactivate with your current installation.

The Asus motherboard has a I875 and the Abit has a I915 chipset. So if I switch out the motherboards and reinstall winxp sp2 on the same hard drive I should be good.

    Please reply

    Thank You
