    Hi All

    Hope you can help.

I have a Toshiba Tecra Laptop (8100) and I installed Windows XP. All was great and then yesterdayI turned on the PC and I got the check disc message. I let the rountine run and it gets stuck at 32% and a whole list of file names and locations appear. I reboot and try and abort the routine and again just piles of files and locations. White Text Blue Background and the system locks up.

I have got a brand new Fujitsu HDD 40GB that I would like to install, but when I pop this HDD in and boot from my XP disk I get a routine called perfect 2002 and an a prompt A:> I get a message to copy folder I386 to hard Drive. When I try to do this on the new HD I get a message saying C: invalid drive.

My question is what do I have to do to try and get this new disc to work and get Windows installed on it? Or is there anyway back for my old drive?

    Really appreciate any help.
    many Thanks
    Steadg :good:

Well, we don't know for sure that your old drive is actually dead, and not just XP's [cheesy] NTFS filesystem. Have you tried reinstalling your OS on your existing hard drive?

If that doesn't work, you'll basically have to install your new hard drive, and then install your OS on that one. Either way, you're going to have to start from scratch. Do you have any important data on the existing system which has not been backed up?

    Hi

Nope no important data just got the pc! So was about to start using it!
I have tried re-installing the os on it but i get some wierd message in the Perfect 2002 program.

Whats the best way of starting from Scratch - would prefer the 40 GIG anyway as I store lots of pics!

Pop in the Windows XP CD and boot off of it. You may have to go into BIOS and change the boot order, but the laptop may already be set to boot off of the floppy, then CD, then HDD.

Anyway, once the CD starts up and you boot off of it, you'll come to a point where you can delete the partition or just format it. NTFS is better than FAT32, which is the only other option available. Just format it, and XP setup will go on it's way. It will reboot after copying the setup files over to the freshly formatted drive, but when it comes up, you'll need to do a few minor things, like enter the product key, set date and time, and configure the network options. The product key is, of course, the only thing you have to enter.

    Nope it dont work!

I pop in the Windows CD and it starts up but I get a program called Perfect 2002 and an A prompt. My HDD is not recognised at all!

The program says copy folder i386 to the hard drive to begin set up but as the PC is not recognising the new HDD I cant do it - thats the bit i'm stuck on! I have moved from a 6GB HDD to 40GB - could that be the problem?
