i was just thinking, and i don't want to sound communist, but wouldn't it make the world of linux better or easier software wise, if there were fewer distos. I'm not saying one but like two or three.
Why Not? I wouldn't say so, there all good for different things and different people... and it encourages competition to be the best. Besides, everything being the same causes a few problems of its own (Like everything being vulnerable to the same attack ).
Swansen, the freedom to take work done under the GPL and modify it for your own needs is what makes free software so great. It's quite selfish to think like "I wish there was less choice". Can I ask have you even tried Linux?
Thats quite harsh Addis, i think Swansen is more trying to suggest the point that if there where fewer distro's, then there would be more resources available for each (human resources, cash etc).
No, I got the impression if there was less choice, there would be less choice and thus easier. The fact is there are lots of different distros because they have different uses, slackware, debian, ubuntu, rhel, centos are all different, but they each have uses. You can't just ignore the rest of the smaller distros. I asked him if he has he tried Linux because he does not seem to use Linux, yet makes comments such as these without experiencing what the OSS world is like. however, I wasn't sure if he had tried it or not. It is not harsh.
I assumed Swansen meant less distro's = more quality, but how about we wait for him to post back and explain his point further before we assume ether of out interpretations to be correct.
HA!!!!, i always check my threads, anyways, school has kept me busy. Yes i have used Linux, a couple times, once a current place of study and for a little bit at a place i shall not name "cough" ITT suck "cough" Anyways, man you guys get all up in a bunch over Linux, but yeah Impotence had it right, why would i say it would make it easier or whatever, i said not to be communist. But yeah, like more people devoted to one thing and a larger concentrated effort, less confusion for the user, or general user. Oh yeah addis thanks for the vote of confidence. Anyways a point you actually made, they all have their different uses, well wouldn't it be "easier" or better if there were a few with all the same uses only in one package. Also i make these "comments" to learn more and get opinions about Linux, as i have decent knowledge of how it works and a rough image of what its like and all its features, so that why i say stuff, sorry if that offends you.
It doesn't offend me, I just didn't understand you properly. I think more communication is needed. Standardisation would be good, but not at the cost of choice. I would rather we have many distros while still maintaining program compatibility. You wouldn't use Ubuntu as a server, or slackware as a user-friendly desktop. Sorry if I came across harsh, but I have to make the point again that you need to explain yourself more about what you think.
Right, well anyways, it would help support and software creation and all that right, i have no real point behind this, i was just kind of curious as to what you guys would say or if you disagree, anyways thanks.
