I recently had problems with my old Toshiba Laptop. It didn't hold a charge and even with it plugged in the mains it would still randomly switch itself off. I switched it on and it came up with the message enter command prompt (or something like that) Using my mums laptop I made a backup disc and corrected all the faults. Now it boots up and then flashes up c:\

I have some important stuff on there which I'm convinced I've lost but I bought a 2.5inch to 3.5inch Hard Drive Adaptor

Maplin > 2.5inch to 3.5inch Hard Drive Adaptor

problem is I have no idea what to do with it/where to plug it in etc (its an old toshiba satelite laptop)

I am very untechnical and any help from you guys would be much appreciated

    Thanks in advance!

Well that link doesnt work but anyway I think I know what you are aiming at.

You need to take your HDD out of your laptop - there will hopefully be some screws holding a plate in on the under-side of the Toshiba, some laptops have the hard drive sliding out of the side - you'll have to work it out.

Then plug the 2.5'' adapter end into the removed laptop HDD (thus giving you a 3.5'' connector) with this done you can now plug that hard drive into a spare IDE cable inside a PC, start it up and if it is XP it should automatically recognise the laptop HDD and give you access to it.

It you have really done a number on the HDD then it may not be accessible in windows and you may have to use some data recovery software to retrieve your files.

    Good luck :)

ps. if your adapter looks like this

Remember to plug a spare molex power connector (that runs from the PC's power supply - you'll see lots of them and hopefully will have one free)

There's probably nothing wrong the hard drive, just the battery. Take the battery out, then plug in the laptop to the wall and see if you get any problems or errors..
