transfering data from ME to XP

Got a friend who is still using ME on his 5 year old PC. The monitor has finally packed in and so he wants to upgrade to a new XP machine.

He asked me if it was possible to find a way to transfer some of the old files from his old hard drive to the new one. He called me yesterday and said he was told he could buy a network card for £5 to put in his ME machine and cross the data over to his new XP machine. He doesn't want to buy an external CD/DVD writer for the task and I don't think he wants to use memory sticks as they are also expensive(ish).

Any ideas on how to transfer data from a 5 year old ME machine to a brand new XP machine?
 
You could set up a network between ME to XP, but windows 9x XP networking can be a hassle. It depends on how much data he wants to move.
 
The other way would be to hook his hard drive up to yours where your optical drive is, transfer the stuff over. Then you can hook his HDD back up to his system, install XP and then quickly hook his drive back up to yours. Transfer the stuff back and you're good to go.
 
A very simple way, if your talking about a small amount of data, is to pack the files into e-mails as attachments and send them to yourself! So long as your e-mails are not too big this is easy and fast. I have used this trick more than once. Save the hassle of moving hard-drives around or burning CD's. Mail them from the ME machine and recieve them on the XP machine and your done.
