I have several prized DVD movies that I would like to backup on to blank DVDs for playing in my home DVD player. I have tried a few programs in Ubuntu - K9copy, DVDrip -and I think, DVDcopy? However, none of them have been at all sucessful, if indeed, they have worked at all!

Can anyone recommend software that works for them?

    Many thanks,

    David :)

I would try DVD Decrypter + DVD shrink.
Google for DVD shrink for linux.
There are loads of guides for Ubuntu.

I remember DVD shrink quite fondly as a proper one stop shop.
However, I never used it in Linux.

Give it a go and let the forum know....

Tried DVD Shrink (Linux version), but that simply did not work. Tried DVD Shrink (Windows version) under Wine on one of my DVDs but it was unsuccessful - oddly enough, I've had success with other DVDs in DVD Shrink (Windows version) under Wine.

I'll see if DVD Decrypter is in my repositories lists and try it or I'll scan for it through the Ubuntu guides or Google it and let you know how it goes.

    Thanks,

    David :)

Some DVD's come with stronger encryption then others. Some come with none.
It could be that you have encountered a well encrypted DVD. DVD decrypter should do the trick. If it does not then just wrap it nicely and leave in the cupboard if you are worried....

Right -tried a few and DVD Shrink (under Wine) is winning so far - I've burned 2 of my prized DVDs using DVD Shrink to decrypt - then K3b to burn the resulting Video_TS file. Only one has not worked so far - but I think that's because the encryption for that DVD is too tough to crack.

I've only ever used DVD Decrypter to rip DVDs. I don't think its legal anymore, which is a real shame.

It is still a very 'grey area'. I am not sure it is explicitly against the law though.... Did you see it written anywhere?
Not disputing... just for general knowledge.
Still, DVD decrypter normally manages to break most encryptions.
