hey, I have recently read an article on the internet that if you use the ubuntu live cd distro you can crack the windows administrator password. it says all you need to do is boot from cd and it will automatically find a SAM file and start cracking it??? ive tried this but it just boots normally into ubuntu so does anyone know how to use ubuntu live cd to crack passwords (for legit purposes)???? thanks peanut
Ubuntu doesn't crack passwords unless you use some tool to do it, its not that type of software. However, there is a very similar linux live cd that does that . I can see why there was confusion. Ophcrack is based on an Ubuntu live CD, but has the tools needed to crack it. Ubuntu on its own won't do it. http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/ -info page http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ophcrack/ophcrack-livecd-0.9a.iso?download download isos here
Of course, it's much easier to just use a live Linux distro to simply change your password than to try and brute-force it. Who needs to know it when you can reset it?
Depends who's password your trying to find out if it was my own pasword, i would reset it, however, if it was the Local Admin password on oen of the machines at school, i would want to know the actual password so i could *explore* every computer (The EST tecs use ghosts, so all the passwords will be the same)
