    Hello everyone

At the moment i have a Intel Core 2 Duo E2160 which is overclocked to 3Ghz. i want to upgrade it and buy a Q6600 energy efficient SLACR 95W Edition. My friends say that its not worth getting because if i overclocked this to 3ghz there wouldn't be a great deal of extra performance so therefore its not worth it and i should wait until the new Intel Penryn comes out but i fear they will be too expensive.

What do you guys think ?

Unless you are running like 10 applications at a time you won't see an increase in performance. And the Penryn are actually not going to be delivering the amazing jump in performance some people think they are. Basically going from a C2Duo to a Penryn that are both clocked the same will give the same performance boost as going from you E2160 to a C2Duo clocked the same. There are major differences in the different cores (especially for video rendering with the SSE 4 instruction set.) But the gaming performance for now will not be that great. BUT, what the Penryn are gonna be amazing for is overclocking. 45nm process means less heat, which means much greater overclocking headroom. That is the reason to buy these newer chips. Just wait till they are cheaper perhaps

Not for the UK, but at first they are going to be extremely expensive.
