Upgrading Video Card

All,
Brand new to the forum, I am sure someone here will be able to help me.

Here is the deal:
I have a pentium 4, 2.6ghz, 1.5GB ram, dell dimension desktop computer. It is a little old (I think I bought it in like 03 or 04). Running Windows XP SP3.

In it I have 2 video cards:
AGP - Radeon 9800
PCI - Radeon 9250

Now, I also have a 50" Panasonic DLP HDTV. This TV has a VGA connection, and I have the radeon 9800 hooked to it. Unfortunately, it only seems to support up to 1024X768@60Hz with the VGA connection. I certainly cannot get the TV to recognize 1920X1080 using the VGA Connection. I have 2TBs worth of disk space and want to use the computer pretty much exclusively for watching movies/tv.

Can I yank the Radeon 9250 pci card out and replace it with something like this?

Will my old computer run ok with the above graphics card (or similar)? Will I just be able to throw it in, boot up, connect it to the television using an hdmi cable, and output 1920X1080 so I can watch HD from the computer?

The Radeon 9800 also has a DVI out. I know you can get DVI to HDMI cables... but I am not sure that this would work for connecting to the television?

Any advice would be much appreciated. Let me know if you need additional info, and I will get it posted. Thanks!
 
If your Radeon 9250 is a PCI card you will not be able to replace it with that card of your choice it is a PCI-Express card which is now the industry standard for all modern motherboards which has replaced AGP. I would consider replacing the AGP card as you might be able to get HD functionality with the AGP bus interface. If your TV supports HD resolutions through an HDMI cable your graphics would need to be able to support the same connecting via a VGA connection will only give you 1024x768 i think 1080 DPI would need to be supported to get a HD picture im not too sure
 
Ok, so, I upgraded my tv. I bought an LG 55" LCD 1080p.

Now -- I hooked up my radeon 9800 with the RGB connector to the tv. I can set the resolution to 1920X1080. It accepts the resolution. BUT - it scrolls around the desktop now as I move the mouse. It does not display the entire desktop at the same time. So, if I download / play a video that is 1080p, is it going to only display part of the video? Anyone know how to correct this?
