Hello, Whenever i have tried to attach a usb portable storage device the computer restarts; these include mp3 players, digital cameras, memory sticks. Also, after the computer restarts it is noticeably slower and, in some occasions, prevents applications from loading properly. The odd thing is that 1 in 20 times i attach the device, it makes the "hardware connected sound" and is functional as the storage device i paid for. If it is relevant i am running Xp with SP2. Any light into the matter would be much appreciated, Cheers
Make sure that you've got an updated anti-virus software like AVG and also download [google]Spybot Search and Destroy[/google] to check for any spyware.
Try doing a repair installation of Windows if you have the disc. Just bootup with the CD and choose a repair installation instead of a normal one. It should preserve all your programs and files but you will need to reinstall SP2 unless your installation cd is slipstreamed with SP2.
Would be hard since even after the sytems has rebooted it still doesnt recognise the devices as an extra drive, even tho when i first plugged them in it launched the found new hardware wizard and i installed them correctly.
I'm not talking about the usb devices, I'm talking about the controller itself. If you go to device manager, then universal serial bus controller-you can uninstall your USB controller drivers. Then when windowsxp boots up it should install generic drivers for it.
Thanks, i will try that next time, as the last thing that wouldnt work (an mp3 player) went back to the store this morning. It could well be the hub that i was using, i didnt even check if it worked when inserted directly into the machine. Thanks for your replies.
