having various probs with kubuntu, basically an updated GUI was installed by adept (accidentaly) now adept is being a proper pillock, when i try anything in adept, adept is trying to uninstall itself (& loads of other stuff) and destop is just a blue wallpaper and no panels (i'd attach a screenshot, but thats not working now either, i'm now re-downloading kubuntu, if i don't format my /home partition, will my data still remain when i reinstall kubuntu, i will be formating kubuntu /

i think my data will be fine, would just like it confirmed

If you've got /home mounted on a separate partition, then you won't lose your data. But I would delete your /home/username/.kde directory to erase any KDE settings you have and start fresh.

Agreed. When I reinstall an OS I usually delete all of the hidden .folders or .files that I don't need.

It almost sounds like you were using the old TWM (Tom's Window Manger) GUI rather than KDE... I suppose it's moot now, but if you right-clicked, would it bring up a simple menu?

when i right click a menu does appear on desktop but my desktop icons & stuff are not there, and a lot on the menu don't work, obviously FF, opera, TB, VMware and a few other stuff like Thunar & konsole, system is usable till new kubuntu finished downloading (about 3 hours left, downloading DVD (over 3487.7) when downloaded i will install it)

ok, i admit it, kubuntu has me by the short & curlies, i now don't want to reinstall from the new download (can't anyway cos download broke at 95%) i now want to fix it (i think it is fixable cos my original desktop was restored behind login, from before this problem occured) now on HDD boot i can't login
    Code:
    xserver error message
    cant remember the exact message

but, a window pops up after login i can only access failsafe mode at login, tried
    Code:
    startx
(knew it wouldn't work, just wanted to know why, got something like
    Code:
    unable to write to /tmp/.X0-lock
    so typed
    Code:
    rm .X0-lock, then startx
screen then filled with same error message, something like
    Code:
xxxxxxx.xxxxxxx hdc, and some other crap
is there an easy way to fix login ?

btw:i'm on net using Live CD (kubuntu 6.06 Dapper)

What are you doing to Kubuntu? :chk: Honestly, it hasn't given me any problems!

In any case, your installation sounds as if it's too damaged to use. If you are running from a Kubuntu Live CD why not install Kubuntu from that??

cos its an older version tha the one now available, it would be to easy to just reinstall a new kubuntu, i'd prefer to fix the login problem, besides that, if i just reinstall kubuntu i feel its like admitting defeat,

i've got to learn how to fix boot problems at some point, may as well be now

BTW: i think the only problem is: the login problem, i think i was overreacting earlier, i was installing & uninstalling stuff, trying to fix a problem that i now think didn't exist, i think the problem was me

the only problem i'm having is: i cant login, can access konsole, but dont know what to type, logon as root fails, when i try to login i get some xserver error message
