VDU Graphics Breakup

Hello Everyone,

The CPU/ OS & RAM is AMD Duron ~704Mhz, Win XP & Linspire Linux 5.0, 384Mb. The TFT VDU is an Acer AL1715. The Graphics Card is an ATI Radeon VE DDR. In either OS (XP or Linspire Linux 5.0) the graphics break up into horizontal lines on the display. The problem is not always present but seems to come and go, sometimes immediately after boot at other times after using the system for a considerable time. The problem seems to be triggered when many graphics have been displayed in succession or when there is heavy use of the mouse scroller (web browsing). It's not only the actual graphics being displayed on a page that are affected but also desktop & quick launch icons. Occasionally the cursor graphic is also affected. The problem seems to be worse when using the Linux OS but can be just as bad in XP. I figure it might be either the Graphics Card or possibly a RAM related problem. Has anyone experienced similar problems? As usual problems seldom appear alone. This is the first time I've come across this one, but amazingly I've just had another one come in with exactly the same syptoms within a week of each other! Click HERE to see a screenshot of the problem at it's worst  .

Have you checked that your drivers are installed correctly? If its still bad then yo've probably got a faulty graphics card. Your card isn't expensive to replace however, and you should be able to get a good replacement for a reasonable price.

Thank you ADDIS,

The drivers for everything are o.k. (I presume it was the Graphics Card driver that you were refering to). I'd already narrowed it down to a) the GC (most likely) or b) possibly a RAM problem - you'll notice that the RAM modules add up to a rather odd No. which is always a dodgy thing. It's a customer's machine so the RAM situation is something that has been done elsewhere. The obvious step is to swap out the GC but as the problem is intermittent the solution may not be evident straight away - hence the reason for the post - to see if anyone had experienced an identical problem before thereby narrowing it down to a definite solution without spending time "poking and hoping". Have you seen a similar problem before?
