    Hi,

I'm having a strange issue with XP whenever I logon or go into standby mode. For years I would just turn my PC on and it would log onto my desktop automatically, no passwords or anything. I recently installed Windows Media Player 10 and every time I turn my PC on I have to select my user name in a "box" before it will log on. When I go into standby mode I used to be able to just move my mouse and i'd be out of it. Now there's some password logon prompt screen that comes up.

I've searched on windows support site and I only see articles saying to go into "users" from the control panel which I have. I don't see any options to get rid of these annoying password screens.

Can anyone tell me how I might be able to fix whatever it is that changed? Thanks in advance.

I have had that problem before, I just downloaded Tweak UI from the microsoft site, and went through the options to Logon, and select "Log on automatically with this username", that fixedit for me.

thanks waffle, i'll try that right now! I wish I knew what options to select without using a seperate program like "tweakUI" to fix this, but i've read TWEAKUI is a good tool to have anyway so i'll get it.

By the way, nice username, with your username and mine we could have a good breakfast.... lmao.... maybe another poster will respond on how to fix this without tweakui and there name will be syrup. That would be crazy. :D

well I got a good scare earlier when I tried TweakUI. I for some reason or another just deselected the option to have my "name" appear at the log on screen so when my PC booted up I could only restart, there was NO OPTION there to log onto my desktop..lmao...that was freaky. So I stayed calm, started my PC in safe mode, opened up tweakUI and just selected the option to allow autologon which is what I should of done to begin' with, all is well now....thanks for the info on the tool Waffle and Addis. :D

If anyone's still interested, here's how to do what Tweak UI is doing behind the scenes to bootup without having to log on.
    1) At a cmd prompt, enter: "control userpasswords2". This will open a User Accounts window. Under the Users tab, simply clear the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer."
    2) Next, in the Automatically Log On dialog box that follows, enter the username/password that for the user you'd like auto logged-in when you bootup.

BTW: couldn't resist creating this username! hehehe :chk:
