Hi all I recently had my PC upgraded RAM-wise. Since then an intermittent problem has occurred, sometimes it's fine for a couple of hours, other times it'll happen every few minutes; The screen goes completely blank and the PC unit keeps whirring away as though it's working fine but I can't get the screen to work again without rebooting the whole lot. I've tried the monitor with another CPU and the CPU with another monitor and both work perfectly but when I put them together this problem keeps happening and it's driving me mad! The other thing I've noticed is that every time I shut the PC down it says there are windows updates to be installed (7 or 8 of them) but this never happened previously. The monitor is the same as before the RAM was added. The other thing I've just realised is that it'll do the crashy thing within a few seconds of opening and starting to use google earth. Can anyone suggest the cause(s) and possible solutions? Any advice gratefully received.
Try and run memory test put it on pendrive or cd and have the pc boot it first. Let the test run to see if its a memory problem Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
Hi Thanks for your reply. Which download of memtest do I need and how do I get the PC to boot from my pen drive?
Download the latest pre compiled iso from here. And burn the iso to a cd, using windows burning or ISO Recorder (instructions on site). Keep the cd in the drive and restart the pc, enter the BIOS setup, by pressing whatever key the boot screen says to enter setup. Navigate your way to boot priority(Or something similar) and makes sure your cd drive is above your hard drive in the priority list. Reboot and it should boot the memtest.(To not boot the memtest take the cd out, or change the boot priority again.)
