Hi All, This is my first post here. I somewhat recently got the opportunity to build my own PC. My old Dell Dimension 9200's graphics card kicked the bucket. In order to upgrade I needed to get a new power supply. Getting 5200 memory worked out more expensive than newer memory and a mainboard. So Begins the story: The new PC consisted of: Coolermaster HAF 912 ATX case MSI G41TM-E43 (mini ATX) mainboard PNY GeForce 450 GTS XLR8 edition 1Gb DDR 2x 4GB PC6400 800MHz DDR2 Thermaltake 600W powersupply Dimension 9200 Intel Core 2 Duo Quad Q6600 2.4GHz (from old dell) Issue(s) When I press the power button: Computer turns on and off 3 - 8 times before the it stays on The lights come on fans start to spin DVD starts to spin powers down This happens almost every time. Sometimes the fans don't even start (randomly within that 3 to 8 attempts to startup) This is all while only pressing the startup button once. When the computer does start up I get this notice: "Warning!!! The Previous overclocking had failed and the system will restore its default setting." The kicker is I had just previously got that notice and set the BOIS to load fail-safe defaults. I have also tried it with Optomized defaults. No joy. Has anyone else experienced this problem? As an aside note: are PSUs independent of ATX/M-ATX? Thank you all in advance. This problem is really frustrating.
is your overclock fsb switch set to default? check the manual for the settings. otherwise im not sure what else could be the issue. what gets me is that when you do get it to start up you get a message about overclocking... as far as the psu being independent, it should be. motherboard and anything thats connected to it will only use what it needs.
Yes the over clock switch is set to the default position. For this particular board it is 1(on) 2(off) 3(on) In the manual it mentions that it is for the FSB. Is that the only overclockable thing or should I be on the look out for a setting in the bios?
Hmmm upon opening the case to check that stuff out I noticed something odd. The 24pin power for the mainboard is actually a 20pin and a 4pin side by side. The 4pin was not in all the way. I unplugged both and put the 4 in first then snapped down the 20 and everything is seemingly fine. I am going to run an install of windows and all the apps as last time I got this far it all came crashing down on me. I sincerely hope that it was that moment of stupidity on my part when assembling the computer was the cause of all my problems. I thank you for your time and patience with me and I'll keep you posted if something goes wrong. *still can't believe it was a "is it plugged in?" issue*
yeah that would be an issue. you must have had it in to where it was just enough to randomly work on/off. nevertheless, the overclocking message is still odd to me. my thoughts are that you should have the overclocking switches on default and load default settings in the bios. disable any options that promote overclocking just for now until you get everything up and running.
Yep. That is exactly what I did So far everything seems to be running fine. Win 7 installed. Passed the Ratings check (something it always crashed on). Installing the rest of my software at the moment so I can give it a more rigorous test. I don't plan on overclocking it at all! That is for those more experienced than I I am just happy it is working... For now
