hello i am new so am sorry for any mistakes etc. n e way i wanted to know if a maxtor diamondmax SATA2 300gb/s be compatible with a SATA 150gb/s sata pci card. will it be backward compatible. nd iz maxtor diamondmax any good. western digital hard drive sound emission is 34 (for some) is it when the hard drive is seeking or just when its on. (i suppose its when the drive is seeking). which is better, wd with 8mb cache (250GB) or maxtor diamondmax 16mb cache (250gb) i hpe 2 hear frm u very soon. thank you
The 150 and 300MB/s refer to burst rates. One can top out higher than the other, but as far as a sustained transfer rate, you're looking at 40-50MB/s. The physical connectors are also the same, so they are compatible that way. Maxtor may be a little quicker, but we've seen some issues with them. I do run some older Maxtors myself, but they're ones that I got after getting their originals replaced. I'd probably go with WD as Maxtor has been bought out by Seagate as well.
To be honest, it's down to personal opinion and experience with a certain brand. I always buy Maxtor as I find them to be very reliable for the price. A hard drive with a 16MB buffer will easily out perform a drive with only 8MB. 16MB of buffer is considered very good.
western digital's sound level is 34db and maxtor is 25db. should i rather go for seagate as i think they are well reliable coz ive got i running for over 6 years thx
what about the wd is it noisy all the time or only when its seeking and searching for data in the hard drive.
The DB rating is referring to the seek time. Hard drives don't make any noise when sleeping. Modern hard drives are pretty quiet. The fan in your computer will likely be the loudest noise coming out of your computer case

Well, on specifications alone, they are equally matched. Although the Maxtor does have the cheaper price. To be honest, I wouldn't like to comment without reading an in-depth review of both drives under pressure. One thing to note though, both of those hard drives are OEM. That means they are likely to be missing a few things that usually come with the retail version. For example, you may not get: Instruction Manual Packaging (original retail packaging - obviously it will come boxed) Jumpers IDE cables Any other usual accessories I've bought an OEM Maxtor drive off eBuyer before. All i got was the hard drive and the jumpers. I didn't even get the retail box - just some tacky cardboard! I didn't mind too much however, because I got the drive at cut rate!
well heres a link to compare the wd gard drive and maxtor 300gb. the maxtor beats the wd by just a tiny bit in almost all of the tests (by .something mb) but i think that wont really matter as im after the wd or maxtor 250GB version and this is the 300GB version. also reliability wise, i think wd is much reliable than maxtor as at least 2-3 people on the reviews wrote that the maxtor drive died about after 2 weeks. the maxtor is rated 25db and the wd 34db, do you think that the wd will be noticable bcoz my computer is very quiet. well wat do u think anyway.
