yes, it does. The sockets are different so therefore the chip won't fit. Plus an Athlon basically murders any similiar spec pentium, so you are better off going for AMD anyway.
The fastest CPU you can buy is the Athlon XP 3200+. You cannot use an Athlon 64 or Athlon FX CPU nor any Sempron in Socket 754 packaging (but Socket 462 is okay, Socket 462=Socket A).
