i have windows 2000 pro on my pc and its rubbish, it keeps crashing and coming up with errors. i have a new pc with 3.4ghz dual core P4, 1gb ram, 80 gb hd ,geforce 7600gs etc. and it ran fine for a few months, but i still got annoying little problems in that time but now that i want to use the internet the thing is doing my head in, i first of all used the internet with no anti virus, bad mistake after just 1 min on google the OS was smashed and needed a fresh install as i had crashes every 1 - 2 mins while running any thing in it, i then tried using a free copy of alarm firewall, but that totally smashed the OS with constant crashing and wouldn’t let me in to any system files, now i decided on a fresh install with SP4 put on all of the hot fixes plus SYMANTEC NORTON SYSTEM WORKS PREMIER & PERSONAL FIREWALL 2006 all installed on there, but when i deleted a 8 gb video file that i know ran fine on several other pc's i got a message up saying dr Watson has corrupted and then my hole os got corrupted but this has never happened on the other systems i have used that file on. I am now so pis**d with this OS that might actually just go back to using my old pc that had windows Me as that was amazingly more reliable than my windows 2000 system, which is a bit worrying, does anyone know how to make windows reliable on my system

Windows ME? You must be joking, ME was the worst OS I have ever used. I still get nightmares about it.
Windows itself is not great at all, but 2000 is miles better than ME. Are you using a hardware router? They provide a lot of protection with a built in firewall, far more than any software firewall.

yeh ME is bad but iam having loads more problems with 2000 than i ever did with ME, i will look in to get a hardware router with built in firewall, iam just getting fed up because i have done about 3-4 new install of win 2000 in just a week, I also get problems installing device drivers even if there def compatible wit win 2000. iam even more pi**ed because it took me hours setting my computer up with all the hotfixes and sp4 then installing anti viruse, etc. i had used it for just an hour and the hole thing gets corrupted cos i delete a video file. i cant even boot into windows so iam gona try a repair install, which i am sure wont work as its never done before, and then i will have to re install it all over again.

hiya history lesson 4 u, windows me is basically a rounded of version of 98 microsoft was supposed to bring out XP wen ME came out but it got delayed so they bought ME out quick and alot of ppl bought it expecting it to be the next big os, however it turned out it was jus 98 with a few addons then they released 2000 with the NTFS (new type filing system) filing system which is considerably better than the FAT32 (file allocation table) used on previous windows operating systems. Im afraid to say 2000 is alot better than ME and some even say xp, but i think thats a personal pereference!. Hope this helps Dave :cool:

Ehh your HD isn't screwed up by any chance is it? Isn't it possible to get an extremely unreasonable amount of errors/corruption if your HD is failing?
It does seem like a hardware issue. I used to get a lot of errors, and for one period of time (8 months) I had all sorts of problems in both Windows and Linux because I had a faulty stick of RAM. I took it out and it worked fine. burn the memtest86 CD that BigB provided, and see if you get errors.
