Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)

Has anyone installed WinRE on their hard drive in Vista? It seems quite a bit more complicated than installing the Recovery Console in XP.

There doesn't appear to be definitive instructions on how or when to install, only that it should be on a separate partition than the OS.

Any thoughts on the subject would be appreciated.

personally i've never heard of WinRE, but i use linux & i promised myself i would never install Windoze again[ot]except as a VM[/ot]

you are correct about WinRE not being installed on a visible partition with your OS but a quick search of google reveled this

it part of Vista from M$, so, personally don't like it, but, people are free to use any OS they like :shrug:

No, I've never heard of it either, although I only used Vista for a month.

[OT]Donkey, when you use Windows in a Virtual machine, do you enable seamless mode? It's really cool because I can run Windows Apps, yet have the security of Linux, and the windows apps don't look like they're in a virtual machine as the windows desktop is hidden.[/OT]

never heard of it, haven't had a VM since my HDD failure, so, i've being saving up

i actually ordered a new 750Gb HDD yesterday along with a new router (Billion BiPAC 7401VP £55 exc VAT from misco) & sound card & speakers (currently with crappy onboard sound & speakers with no PSU

It's really cool because I can run Windows Apps, yet have the security of Linux, and the windows apps don't look like they're in a virtual machine as the windows desktop is hidden.

Edit: 750gb is a huge hard drive! Last week I bought and installed 2 x 500gb HDD's in a RAID 1 array, I never backed up, so I suppose this at least covers my back from HDD failure.

not backing up is not a good idea[ot]having said that i personally never backup, i should follow my own advice[/ot]but at least it's a Seagate drive not :swear:ing crappy Maxtor

I just installed Vista today . . . curiosity got the better of me. Seems nice so far. I had decided not to install Windows Recovery during the install since it was kind of confusing on how to handle.

Then I read the article from Network Computing. It does make it more clear . . . Thanks, Thomas1234.

At least for now I have the installation CD if I need it for repairs.

the WinRE idea reminds me of Bart PE has M$ done their usual trick of stealing someone elses idea, & saying to them "well sue us" ?
