ok here we go again have been to another pc fayre tonight & purchased some more memory(pc133) 512 mb this time . on installing it on it's own i tried all 4 slots and could only get it to register @127mb i thought the earlier post with half memory was bad enough but now it's down to quarter ! yes this geek parted with £43 for what in effect is a memory increase of 96mb , do i feel robbed or what . also picked up a 6 port usb hub (internal) and on trying to install this found i need another lead , have not seen anything like this before but it connects the hub through a plug & play thingy to the existing usb port . if all this isn't bad enough have bought a cd writer (don't yet know if it works , too scared to try ! ) and on mt return while i have been out had a post recommening not too waste money upgrading current relic , wish i'ld stayed at home instead now ! :spin:  :swear:

it seems you are in need of a good upgrade, like new motherboard etc you could build a decent system for around £200 to £250 depending on, if you buy new or used stuff.

do you know someone who can build you a system? even better you can build it your self with our help.

You could probably reuse some of the parts like optical drives, maybe your HD and upgrade your mobo, cpu, ram and graphics card.

thanks sniper have managed to fit extra cd rom's cd writer , extra hard drives , memory (ok , unsuccesfully ) replaced floppy , formatted and installed windows so the next stage has got to be a complete build (imagine the stress i can create ) like the look of these see through towers & am really tempted to try . How difficult can it be ? ps. have had loads of fun taking other pc's to bits to try to scavenge stuff for my relic .... serious stress relief wreckovation ! it's just :swear: memory i struggle with .
have now got loads of bits stashed everywhere gathering dust
latest attempt is overclocking (from 300 mhz to , at the moment 5*100 !) :good:

It could be that your particular motherboard doesn't support that large of memory modules, and there's really nothing you can do about it. I would test it in another PC that you know supports a 512MB stick of PC133 before you give up on it completely, just in case you do have a bad stick.

Agree, older motherboards for pre-1GHz sometimes don't support sticks larger than 256mb. I know mine doesn't.

:hi: thanks :good: i sort of guessed that the motherboard wouldn't support that big a memory stick because in the bios(i think) settings it's got an option for the memory that tops out at 256mb , which would explain why the 512 won't work , but the stick of 256 is still a mystery .
good news though the overclocking seems to be working it definately seems faster , :D thanks all for the advice :good:
:tricky: what sort of motherboard would you all recomend i use the pc for surfing mainly & being on a tight budget will be investing 2nd hand (mortgage , car loans etc ,)
apologies for smilies couldn't resist playing !

You'll probably be able to find older mobos in places like dabs and savastore.
