XP keeps restarting after new installation of RAM

Hi im new to this forum :D

Any help with this would be appreciated.

I recently tried to upgrade my ram. However when i installed the ram i soon realised it was the incorrect ram :confused:, as my computer showed the blue screen of death and then rebooted.

I soon removed the ram but since then my xp has continously rebooted.
I also can't access safe mode.

I then thought that i might have damaged my old previous ram so I ran memtest86 to see if there were any problems. Memtest reported that my was fineram. I also ran windows recovery cd and did a chkdsk /r but still no success. Please any help would be appreciated because im completely baffled to whats causing this problem. Im considering buying a new hard drive so that i can recover the data on the existing hard drive.

My system is

XP Home SP2
1GB RAM DDR SDRAM
Chipset Intel 915P
Motherboard ASUS P5GD1 PRO
Hard Drive SATA 160gb
 
I Think i might have put this in the wrong forum. As I believe it should be computer hardware :doh:.

I've had a look at other users with the same issue and could it be that my CPU is over heating i have a pentium 4 chipset 915p. I've looked at the CPU temperature inside the BIOS and its gives me a reading of 60*C. This seems high for an initial boot and im not sure what the maximum CPU temp is for pentium 4's. I tried connecting an external fan that drops the temperature to 45*C. But the same issue occurs. Is there a way to confirm that my CPU is overheating or that i've completely fried my processor?
 
Open the case and remove the bios battery for 10 minutes, then replace, then see what happens. Also make sure the ram is the same ...
 
its possibly due to one of the following:

1) there is insufficient voltage getting to the ram
2) you have inserted 1 or more different types of ram*
3) your bios is pushing your ram too fast

*in the oldern days (post 1999) faster ram was incompatible with slower motherboards and problems like yours would occur, if your motherboard is quite old it may be that the ram is too new for your mobo - a bios update MAY fix this

we need to know all the details of the ram (MHz, MB, Cas, Voltage etc), change your bios settings to match the rams specs. your motherboard manual should let you know how to do it

if your new to all this I appologise for my technical lingo but its what i believe is the problem, get back to us if you need help changing the bios settings to match the ram specs
 
i've tried removing the bios battery for 10 minutes but still no luck. I've also changed the processor fan to a artic fan freezer 7 and im now getting a CPU temperature of 35C rather than the previous 60-70C.

But the problem still occurs.

My motherboard is only 3years old its an ASUS P5GD1 Pro. It supports the LGA 775 Intel Chiptset. It has a 915p intel chip.

I originally tried to install the SAMSUNG DDR SDRAM ram non-ECC RAM. Which caused the original problem. I later purchased RAM from the crucial website (matching it with my motherboard) but the problem still occured.

The ram that my board supports is DDR PC3200, Unbuffered, NON-ECC, DDR400, 2.6V.

Im unsure how to obtain those reading s :confused: (as you've probably guessed im not that technical :chk:)
But i'll play around in the bios and see if I can get the readings i'll also update the bios and get back to you.

Im not sure if this helps with diagonis. But i recently removed my hard drive and placed it into enclosure kit. Tried to boot from that but the same thing kept happening. Could it be the Boot Record/Table :confused:. I can still access the hard drive as an external drive however.
 
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but booting from an external drive may cause issues like this because the data is going through the USB, right?

If you haven't already, try booting normally from a SATA or IDE.
