Hi all, I just have a couple q's about PSU's. I am looking to get a PSU anywhere above 430W, and I was primarily wondering if there were any particular things I should be looking for?? Also, I was wandering, can I get any PSU, or does it have to be compatible with my MOBO like the RAM does for example. If so, how do I know what I should be looking for in order to make sure they work together?? I am probably going to get an Antec or OCZ, but does any one else know any other good makes?? Thanks for any help in advance
antec, ocz, zippy, tagan, pc power and cooling, hiper etc theres so many but i think u can get an antec one for good value. PC power and cooling is really expensive and considered the best. Hiper ones are also cheap and good quality, get the type-r 580watt for around 60 pounds if u want a modular nice looking one and good performance
ok cool, thnx, but also, do i need tomake sure of any compatability issues between the mobo n the psu or can i get ne psu?
you should look at [link=http://www.hardwareforums.com/power-supply-sticky-5218/]this thread[/link] before buying any PSU. Yes...Check if its ATX(Normal Tower PC) or MicroATX(Small Form Factor).... Edit: 4got to write, if u have a companys PC then I cant say anything... Coz, i have a Dell PC nd its PSU is different from the Standard PSU's, which really Sucks!
Some companies did used to use PSU's that used different connectors etc, it was their way of ensuring that when you wanted to upgrade you had to buy their stuff, it's not so much the case nowadays. Modular PSU's while useful for some aren't the best idea - the extra connections between cable and PSU unit just increase resistance and make the PSU work that little bit harder to supply power - avoid them if you can. Like stated above, read Big B's PSU thread it's a great source of information. Antec, Enermax, Tagan, Thermaltake, Sparkle, OCZ, PC Power & Cooling are all great brands as stated in Big B's post and above, a decent 450W+ unit should do you nicely.
that sucks! What do u mean by normal tower PC or small form factor? yeh i know, some companies are g*y like that. Yup, gonna go check the Big B thread now - thnx for the help so far guys much appreciated. 4got to say - here is the link to my mobo - maybe this will help u guys in helping me to find the right PSU for my comp??? 1) MSI Computer Corp. - Product 2) MSI K8MMV Motherboard- Find, Compare, and Buy MSI K8MMV Motherboard at PC Magazine
Hey guys - a quick update - was looking for PSU's - i looked @ the big b thread for recommended brands - i found this 530w PSU by hiper - can any one tell me if this is compatable with my mobo and whether or not this is infact a good PSU??? thnx very much all. Komplett.co.uk - Hiper PSU ATX 530W Black, Type-M, 120mm Fan, 2xSATA, 2xPCI-E, 20/24pin
sweet i found one more - its another hiper one, very similar to that one, but @ 580W rather than 530W - here is the link to the other one, just wanna make sure that compatible too?? (here is the link) Hiper HPU-4M580 Type R 580W ATX2.2 PSU - Black Btw - are the PSU's i have shown u all so far good yeh? One last thing, how do u know from looking at my mobo that the PSU's are compatable - i tried to figure it out lol n got confused ??
There's a 20 or 24-pin (newer motherboards are 24-pin) power connector. On your motherboard, it's the white block grouped with the IDE and Floppy connectors. White is typically the color used here, but sometimes companies use an alternate color. Unless you're looking at a server/workstation-class motherboard, any motherboard produced in the past 4-6 years (if not older) is ATX or the mATX formfactor. mATX calls for a slightly shorter PCB, so the expansion slots are less as well as additional real estate for extra storage and high-end audio chips. ATX and mATX motherboards are both part of the general ATX standard, so any PSU for ATX works with either. If by chance a PSU says mATX, it just uses a shorter chassis to fit into a compact mATX case, nothing more. That PSU is also good. A few people are using Hiper units around here with great success.
LOL! Slightly confusing but I think I get the jist of it - thnx a lot buddy for the help :good: thats good to hear - i think I'll get one of those 2 PSU's - just to clarify ONE more time - those 2 PSU's are 100% compatible with my MOBO?
Yes. every psu would fit a motherboard like urs (except dells *shi*y etc.) modern motherboards require an extra 4 pin power connector which the hiper DOES have. i think ur motherboard deosnt even need the extra 4pin power connector so u've nothing to worry about. Also wat case do u have. if uve got a tiny case then there may be trouble trying to fit the psu in the first place
Lol that cool for me then i know this may sound odd, but I don't actually know what make my case is :s - if you could tell me where to look that would be of great help - then i could let you know what make it is. other than that - the case is relatively big, i mean, i have an av tv tuner/media card thingy - 7600gt agp card, 64bit processor. as compared to most cases i would say mine is slightly bigger than average i guess?
If your case is something like then its an ATX Tower case.... or if its like then its MicroATX small form factor Case....
oh lol! that was simple lol. its the former, an atx tower case - my case is like one of them, accept no see through bits lol
