Here you go Acer, here are all my passwords...

After contacting Acer about my 3 week old laptop which has died, they have sent me an email telling me to send it to them to fix. Included in the email was
Acer Support said:
Please back up all data before it is sent in as we cannot guarantee your data will be preserved.
Please could you also include a list of all passwords and user accounts needed to access the system, including the eRecovery password.

Do they honestly think I'm going to give them all my passwords? It has some eBay account details on, private e-mails etc that I don't want them to have.

However, Kubuntu is pretty much a fresh install and has no personal files on. Is there a guest account I can give them to log onto?

Just thought I'd have a rant.

A guest account is limited in use. But you could better give the data to them, or they might not be able to fix it. But don't send it with the mail! But write those passes down on paper, and include it together with your laptop.
 
They just mean the usernames and passwords needed to enter and administrate Windows it seems to me.
 
But why would they need the usernames and passwords... it's a hardware fault, not software. They'll know if the laptops fixed because it will switch on.
 
Plus, if you really know how to fix a computer, you should know how to bypass the passwords. Sounds like incompetence to me, for a huge company like Acer anyway.
 
They obviously don't know about Linux live CDs.

If they demand a password, just create a new account in XP called 'Acer' and give it limited privileges. They won't be able to access your 'My Documents' folder then.

Hmmmm... easier said than done, as the laptop won't do anything. Simply powers on to a blank screen, no BIOS Beep codes or anything.

tell em it doesnt even switch on so wat can u do. if it doesnt have any VOID IF REMOVED stickers, then take out the HD and mount it on a caddy and copy and delete important files. make sure they dont find out but the is really the only option
 
Already thought of that... but thanks anyway. There were no void stickers, but I don't have a caddy so couldn't plug it in. It's all packed up now and ready to be picked up. I've included the recovery password so if necessary they can re-install everything, stuff that I really need was backed up... I think
