Search Google for a broader picture; at this writing, about 283,000 pages contain the number with hyphens, and just under 10,000 without hyphens. There's a song. Several domain names [Links removed] including variations of the number have been reserved.

Today was an insane day. And as the founder of Digg, I just wanted to post my thoughts…

In building and shaping the site I’ve always tried to stay as hands on as possible. We’ve always given site moderation (digging/burying) power to the community. Occasionally we step in to remove stories that violate our terms of use (eg. linking to pornography, illegal downloads, racial hate sites, etc.). So today was a difficult day for us. We had to decide whether to remove stories containing a single code based on a cease and desist declaration. We had to make a call, and in our desire to avoid a scenario where Digg would be interrupted or shut down, we decided to comply and remove the stories with the code.

But now, after seeing hundreds of stories and reading thousands of comments, you’ve made it clear. You’d rather see Digg go down fighting than bow down to a bigger company. We hear you, and effective immediately we won’t delete stories or comments containing the code and will deal with whatever the consequences might be.

If we lose, then what the hell, at least we died trying.

So... can you copyright a number? Surely they have been around far too long to be copyrighted! :P

If you can, then whats to stop you from say.... calculating pi to 1 more digit than has been done before and copyrighting it? (Or even just claiming the copyright to 3.14, or even the number 3!) And the take legal action against anyone who calculates pi any further than you (as they are infringing on your copyright!!!!).

If AACS win this, then in theory you can claim copyright on any 32 character hexadecimal number (and what it converts into in any other base) so you can copyright any number from 0 to 340282367 × 10 to the power of 30 (note: my maths might be wrong)

If you want to see the number that the AACS claims that they own you can get it out of the slashdot article or google, i have not posted it because i don't think Sniper, Big_B etc would appreciate me doing so! As I'm sure he has better things to do than deal with bogus legal claims... (Freedom of speech, yes, but i don't pay the electric, for hardware etc! so no)

this is pretty sweet. I must have been under a rock or something, but i didn't realize how huge this whole thing is. Granted, i completely agree with the statement Impotence, this is just one more of the already many, stupid and ridiculous patents.
