Automatic driver search online driving me crazy!

Hi all,

I plugged in a new printer and when the Windows "Found New Hardware" wizard popped up, I accidentally clicked the option to "search online for drivers" - EVERY TIME.

Now this is driving me crazy. I don't want Windows to try to search automatically every time I try to install something. How on Earth do I cancel this option? I have searched everywhere, but to no avail.

Please help. Thanks.
 
Right-click on My Computer, and click on Properties. Go to the tab Hardware. Click on Windows Update, and choose Never Check.
 
I don't quite get you...

That would disable Windows Update from checking for Operating System updates, surely. That is not my problem. It's the searching for drivers online automatically that I want to put a stop to.

By the way, I use Vista x64.

no, that stops the system from checking for drivers on Windows Update. Windows update is the place where windows checks for drivers, next to OS updates and additions. The updates for the OS can only be disabled by going to Start > Programs >windows update.

That changes the steps to perform:

1. Right-click on Computer and go to Properties.
2. Click on Advanced System Settings.
3. Go to the tab Hardware and click on Windows Update Driver Settings.
4. Choose "Never check for drivers of a new device".
5. Click on OK.

Thank you very much. Yes - I think the confusion was because I was using Vista and your original instructions were for XP.

I find it ridiculous how Windows' own Help system does not seem to provide the answer for this, no matter what I search for. Thanks a lot for your advice.
