Which Intel processor is better either dual or quad?

I am having K8T Neo2 mobo and Athlon 3500+ socket 939 processor. If my processor fails in future, i am planning to buy an Intel CPU which is high end like either Quad or dual processors.

In that page... Q9300 or Q6600 is a good choice?
And a clock speed of 2.50 GHz means is it each core has 2.5 Ghz or all cores combined makes it 2.5 Ghz?

And coming to mobos for those quad processors...

In that page... DQ35MP or DQ35JO mobos is a good one for quad processors? OR DP35DP is a better one?

Please give suggestion if my above choice of Quad is good to go or some other?

Depends on whether you actually need 4 cores. Dual cores can be useful when multitasking with media, like video editing, AV scanning and the like. Personally I'd go for a dual core.

The 2.5GHz applies to both cores.

You don't have much faith in your processor, if you think it's going to fail then why get it??? besides it might take it years before it fails and the new quad cores will be out of date.

The Q9300 is a much better then the Q6600.
If you can afford it then a Q9450 is a much better CPU then the Q9300

All cores will run a 2.5GHZ it doesn't mean that it's accumulated to be 10GHZ like some retailers say on ebay :doh: lol it means that the whole chip will run at 2.5GHZ (speed is not split over the 4 cores). the Q9300 will overclock to well over 3GHz speeds.

And coming to mobos for those quad processors...

That's not really a good choice of mobo

you can either go for P35 chipset, X38, X48 or nForce 7 series mobo

i have picked good mobos for the different chipset all perfect for quad but the best to go for are either X48 or nForce 7

P35 mobo: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R (Socket 775)

X38: left out because not really a lot of difference from X48

X48: Gigabyte GA-X48-DQ6 Intel X48

nForce 7: MSI P7N Diamond nForce 780i SLi

BTW these are all DDR2 mobos

Expanding on what Addis said, a single core can be thought of as one person. Say this person is 6' 6". If you have a second 6' 6" person helping them, do you have one 13' person? Of course not. The same is true of multi-core processors and multi-processor configurations.

Again, having a dual or quad-core depends on what you do. If you're going to game, having a quad-core isn't going to give you a benefit. Now, if you want to do that, run some video editing and do work in Maya or something at the same time, then, yes, get a quad-core.

For the mother boards, the DP35 is an ATX size board, and has a few more expansion slots. The DQ35 is a micro ATX (mATX/uATX) board. Either will work, but it'd help to know what purpsose you're building this system.

Also, are Intel motherboards your only option? You don't have to get an Intel-built motherboard as many other companies build Intel compatible boards with the P35 and Q35 chipsets like those you're asking about.

first of all u should checkout your motherboard bus,intel quad core runs at a very high speed,intel dual core should be fine enough,in case u go for a quad core there is no os by any firm which can make the quad core work fully,hencee dual core is abetter option for u now.

Thanks for all ur suggestions.. I will be using for chess engine analysis wherein there are programs which are programmed to run in quad core or even 8 cores also :D
Maybe some graphic games also...

And one more doubt.. if any core out of those 4 cores fails, does the CPU still function or no use of it anymore? Might be a silly question but please ignore my stupidity in this lol
