New SATA dvd drive not working

My old IDE drive gave out a week ago so i bought the ASS
Newegg.com - ASUS Black 20X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 20X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 14X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe - CD / DVD Burners . i hooked the thing up to my power and motherboard. and i used a SATA connection.

The user manual for the disk drive says you should be able to just plug it in, and windows will automatically install the drivers. However windows doesn't even seem to know its there.

The light on the hard drive is on. so it isn't a power problem. One other symptom is that the drive won't even open up when i press the button...

My mobo is the ASUS A8N sli deluxe. And it seems to have 8 SATA connecors, 4 on one side, and 4 on the other. i put it into both sides and nothing worked

I plugged it into a different SATA port, and now my bios detects it. I think it says its a Master.

I havn't formated it, don't know how--

But now that its been detected with the port it works... or so i thought. It will read discs, but it is really jittery/laggy... :mad:. And when i tried burning a DVD with this it burned some stuff onto the dvd (i visually saw it), but it stops after about 10 seconds and says "DMA Driver Error, CRC Error":confused:. I am doing all this in nero.

One thing that might be causing the nero issue is it says that its automatically choosing dvd-r, when my discs i'm putting in are dvd+r. i'll check on that but still the drive shouldn't be playing movies this bad.

After reading other forums on your issue it seems that your DMA is turned off (even though DMA settings are naturally for IDE connections).
Here's how to turn on your DMA settings:
Enable DMA mode in Windows XP

Here's the forum where i found the information:

Read it and tell us if it solved your problem :D

doh, indeed! used to SATA mainly being used for hard drives, well spotted.
 
Well i looked at that link, and did what it said. but the settings were already configured the correct way. Thanks for the try though man

I also tried what the bottom of the page says (uninstall drivers, then reboot). nothing worked..
 
Man im running out of solutions here. Could it be your BIOS settings?
Get a camera, enter your BIOS settings and take some shots if you can. I don't know what you should take pictures of lol, but anything in your advanced settings that relates to your drive.

Other ideas anyone?
 
Thats odd... SATA drives don't have Master or Slave configurations. Are you sure thats for your DVD drive and not something else?

Put it at slave and see what happens. While you're at it whats the version of your BIOS as well as the manufacturer? (its to the top when your in BIOS)
