Corel Paint Shop Pro XII

Hello,

I searched at Google for a place to find help with this problem and your forum came up first. I guess it means it is good.:)

I installed Corel Paint Shop Pro XII tonight and I can't get rid of that error message when I quit:

Code: 
The instruction at "0x044d9250" referenced memory at "0x04b70654". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program.
** Note that the program is already terminated by the time I get this message **

Plus, it refuses to take the new preferences I choose. It looks like it does but when I launch the software again they are back to what there were.

I even uninstalled, restarted Windows, reinstalled, restarted Windows... The problem is still there.

So my question is, more specifically, what good software would you recommend to help me fix such problems now and in the future?

I use Windows XP Pro SP3.

Can you let us know your full system specs, including the brands and speeds/ratings.

This error usually means either:
You have some bad memory
You have a bad sector on an area of your hard drive that is being used as the swap file

Download and run Memtest 86 to rule out the RAM
Run a full checkdisk on your hard drive to rule out the Hard drive

That should be your starter for ten, let us know how you get on - and welcome to HWF :)

Already did the MEM Test and chkdisk and everything is fine. This is a brand new computer I had built to my specifications and until I installed PSP yesterday I didn't have any problem.

As to the computer description, I don't know exactly how to find what you need to know so I ran WinAudit and this is the result for the computer itself.

There were no trojans nor virii in my computer. But I solved the problem finally.

I uninstalled the program AGAIN, then I searched my C: drive for "corel",*paint",*psp"

I archived all the entries I found but removed them from my HD completely. There were some files in Windows, in Documents & Settings, and elsewhere. Corel, like Microsoft, Adobe and Symantec, tends to have ramifications all over the place.

Then I reinstalled and everything is okay now.

Thanks. I have that but since I used Zards Cleanse Uninstall to uninstall PSP I thought it had cleaned everything so the 3rd time around I decided that we are never better served than by ourselves! loll

BUT I will use it in the future though.

Well... the problem has come back!!!

So I used that ccleaner and tried again and it still gives me that error message. Now there is no virus, no trojan, nothing to make this happen and I don't know what else I can do!!!

Any other suggestions?

Oh bugger so is it being temperamental or does it happen every single time you close the program?

Yes it does and it is always the same message. And there is no errors in the HD allocation spots (or whatever you call it). That has been eliminated. The memory is fine too. Another thing eliminated with MEMTest. The virus and trojan hypothesis is ruled out too. I scanned the whole computer with Avast, SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes. And it is a brand new computer anyway... I am just starting to reinstall my programs! The problem is with this specific error that I have MANY plugins for that program because I've used PSP since it was first released a long time ago. Now I don't dare installing these plugins until I am sure I won't have to reinstall the program itself again.

I sent an email to Corel but they said they'd reply in 48-72 hrs. What am I supposed to do while I wait? Cross my fingers and stop the installation of everything else? DUH!!!
 
It is an odd one especially if it is just PSP, I assume of course you have updated it to the most recent patch? (if there are any) also are you running sp2 or 3 on XP

As soon as you said about the plugins it rang alarm bells but then I read on and you don't have any installed at all?

Can you run prime 95 indefinitely or does it crash?

Hum.. Not sure I understand what this does or how to make it work. I chose "Stress Testing" only and now it says:
Worker #1: self-test
Worker #2: self-test

Is that okay? Is there something else I must do? I selected BLEND as the kind of test I wanted performed.

And BTW yes I use WinXP Pro SP3 and no, I have no plugins installed yet. I have hundreds of plugins, free and commercial and I don't intend re-installing each of them if I have to reinstall the program AGAIN! loll
 
Na just leave it for a while will tell you if your new system is truly stable or not. It is doing something, if you bring up task manager youll see your CPU is working hard! :D

Yes I saw it was doing something. So I stopped it because I shut down my computer every night. I figured I might as well start it first thing tomorrow morning and let it run at least till I go to bed tomorrow night to have a better idea.
 
Coolio, i'm kinda at a loss for usefull other ideas other than that it is an actual program fault - maybe something will come to me overnight - do let us know what corel say.
 
I will. IF they reply.

I think I will try installing it to a new location. I guess it's the only thing I haven't tried yet.
