Networking a Vista Laptop to a XP Desktop PC...

Hi all, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to this, so I was hoping someone here might tell me what I need to do this. I want to be able to print, backup, and share files from the laptop to the PC, and preferably wireless. My Laptop has Bluetooth, though I've never used it and the desktop has no wireless anything on it as far as I know. A list of parts I'll need to get started will be great.

My experience level is probably a high end noob. I have replaced drives and DVD drives and RAM and such, but that's about it...

The Laptop is:

Gateway ML6732
Intel Dual Core 1.73 Ghz
3 Gb Ram
blah blalh blah...

The PC is

Gateway GT5082
AMD Dual Core 2.0 Ghz
2.0 Gb Ram

If you would be able to think, you would understand that it is too much trouble to set up a bluetooth network. It would be an ad-hoc type network, not like AP and client. Besides bluetooth is consuming even couple mW more than wireless and doesn't have much range either. Just go with Wireless and no problem.
At least here in 3rd world country a wireless router starts from 21Ls (thats 40 something $). If you don't need n standart and next milleniums bandwith/throughput - the cheapest router will be enough for you.
 
Oooh... Intentionally complicated sounding tech talk just puts me right in my place. You're just so smart. Gosh, I wish I were an insecure narcissistic prick who can only get a feeling of self worth by trolling forums, just like you!

It's times like this I hate being staff. OK, here's the deal: Let's keep the flames off the board please. If not, I'll have to pull out the ban hammer, and nobody wants that (including me).

Back on topic, macbeton is actually correct in the technical sense. Bluetooth is really better suited to handling peripherals, not full-on networking. Real wireless networking hardware is inexpensive and readily available, so there's really no advantage to trying to force a bluetooth network. It's really my definition of a solution looking for a problem.

On the other hand, if the machines are located physically near to eachother, you could just use a crossover cable (you can buy these at retail chains for like $5), which requires no other hardware than the NICs that are almost certainly already built into your systems. In that case you don't even need a switch or any other hardware, just one simple cable. It will be many times faster and more reliable than wifi for transferring files. The downside is you have to take 2 seconds to plug it in before you transfer files... *click*

I have to admit I have never come across such attitude in this forum.
One of the things which always seperated this forums from others is that even the very experienced users are sympathetic to every level of knowledge or computer literacy. Please, even if you find questions frustrationally simple or obvious, keep the spirit of the forum. We do not want users to leave because of such experiences...

I see couple of end-users judging me, but none helping that guy with a thru-arse (russian joke) bluetooth solution.
If you are so smart and entuziastic - come on, tell him in 2 sentences how to build the home network with what he has! :D
Then we will count the time and compare to what a Wireless PCI card or a TP cable (and rented crimping tool) costs.
The secret of a good IT specialist isn't a certificate or theoretical knowledge. It is logics. You don't go with the head thru awall if you can find a door, right? Same in IT.

Did you even read my post? I asked you to keep it civil, and also gave a $5 suggestion that would get the job done. Which part did you not understand? Sheesh.
