does after the desktop icons comeback everything works in order? what operating system you posses on your PC?
from what ive read its a automated function with in the card to use this extra memory for video calculation with in the game environment.
do you have drivers up to date? and it sounds like a memory problem rather then GPU, did you check temperature handling of your GPU (use furmark)
there seems to be very little about this particular laptop on ebay, when did you buy this laptop?

If I were you I would run some bench marking tests on the memory and CPU, or use FRAPS for testing your frames with different settings in games....

As stated by Terje Gundersen your PSU will not sufice for GPU of this magnitude. You can always check PSU requirements in GPU specifications.
