Building A Diskless Computer For Usb Disk Drives

As a volunteer, I administer several desktop computers in a community center of retirees. I am working to provide users with diskless desktops so that they can use a persistent Linux Mint USB key, or an external drive with our hardware. For privacy and maintenance reasons, this is our best long...

    How To Select Ram

As a general computer user, I can only offer some insights into general computer use. I've been down this road recently a couple of months ago, and one needs to consider numerous other issues before you consider the memory speed, which should be the last consideration. But, for a quick reply...

    Amd Cpu + Ddr4 + Motherboard

Is there an AMD CPU, motherboard, for DDR4 available at this time? Information on the web is a year old and it only mentions coming AMD products.

    <solved>controller Error Needs Triage

It seems that in an all SATA environment, \Device\Ide\IdePort refers to the CD-DVD drive. Installed another disk drive and the disks are in the same order as the SATA port numbers identified by the BIOS as 1 to 4 and moved the CD-DVD to port 4 on the MB. Immediately, I got an Event ID error...

    <solved>controller Error Needs Triage

Thanks WM. I ordered new SATA cables to replace all (just in case), as well and an upgraded power supply. They should be here tomorrow. The current PSU is a 9 year old 430 Watt Antec which works well, which I clean regularly. Nevertheless, I have concerns about 9 year old electronics no matter...

    <solved>controller Error Needs Triage

Thanks for the response WM, AHCI is correctly configured in the BIOS. This old ASUS motherboard is Sata2. I want to replace it but that's not possible at the moment. This still doesn't tell me SATA port the error is referring to.

    <solved>controller Error Needs Triage

Can anyone please tell me how I can identify which Sata port would be for Even ID: 11? "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort2." The ports are: Sata1: Sandisk 120Gb SSD boot drive Sata2: Seagate Baracuda 500GB data drive Sata3: Unused Sata4: HL-DT DVDRAM ATA device...

<solved>can A Dead Ssd Be Revived

Wicked Mystic, you have a very good point. Just tried to get an opinion. What I don't understand (in my case 120GB), the prices are so different within the same brand (Samsung). And here again, I have no clue about trusted brands with a decent history of reliability, because I owned the Patriot...

<solved>can A Dead Ssd Be Revived

Have a Patriot Torqx 120GB SSD which died due to a bad SATA cable. At first the BIOS recognized it for what it was, and Windows 7 re-installed the driver. I didn't want to recover anything, just wanted to reformat it using Minitool Partition Wizard Pro 9, which reported that it's a bad drive...

Looking For New Cpu, Mb & Memory

Since my work is Wikipedia and Wikisource related, mostly text and some image work with Irfanview, I decided to go with the FX-4300, because I can't justify the extra expense for my needs. Also, I must also buy a suitable power supply with which I am undecided. Currently, I am looking at this...

Looking For New Cpu, Mb & Memory

Unfortunately, FX-4320 is not sold in Canada, not by Newegg, or Amazon. AMD FD832EWMHKBOX FX-8320E FX-Series 8-Core Black Edition at CAN $193 is more expensive than the Intel. If you can recommend a package of what would be your choice, Intel or AMD, with the right motherboard & memory, I...
