    Sussed it. I reformatted the sata, loaded the (OK it's microsoft) OS onto it, attached a non-bootable IDE (cos it hangs without at least one IDE)...

    I done something that sort of worked! I copied the DDO driver from the Maxtor driver disc onto a bootable floppy and the SATA booted and now boots...
