Something is Faling, motherboard, CPU or HDD? HELP!!

Can't be of too much help here, but I had similar problems with screen freezes, etc. I put in a new motherboard and everything was solved! Strangely enough, with the old board, I could not install many XP updates, but with the new board - no problem (don't know it this is just a...

Just a big thank you to all!

Well, when I first joined HWF, I had never seen the inside of a PC. Thanks to all the great help and advice I have had and the knowledge I've gleaned from reading through the threads - I have just finished building a low spec PC for an elderly neighbour who was rather short on cash, so the PC...

    disabling a built in modem

Try going into BIOS and (it depends on your particular BIOS) look under "Integrated Peripherals" and look for, (I think) "Onboard MC'97 modem" and disable it.

    New motherboard - problems.

UPDATE: Well, I don't know how I managed it, but apparently, I've screwed the processor on installation! Come to think of it - when I first started to troubleshoot the PC not booting, I took off the heatsink and noticed that the that the imprint of thermal paste transferred by the...

    New motherboard - problems.

No, Dave. I just reset the BIOS for the normal amount of time. However, I'll bear what you have said for the next time :P . The board is being tested, so I hope it's just a dodgy board and I can RMA it for a new one.

    New motherboard - problems.

Yes, tried resetting the CMOS, but it made no difference. I'm having the motherboard tested locally, so i'll see how it goes from there. There was a slight burning smell when I powered up for the first time, so my guess is that the motherboard is defective. I installed it according to the...

    New motherboard - problems.

Well, just installed a new motherboard and thought everything was okay. The PC powered-up first time - CPU fan spinning & got to POST. I then went into BIOS to configure devices, etc. Both HDs are showing up in BIOS, along with the RAM, so everything seems fine as such. However, the...

    Backup software for Windows?

I use Acronis True Image 10. As disk-imaging software, it takes a 'snapshot' of any of your HDs (including the OS, of course) and also does incremental & differential backups. The software is fairly inexpensive & easy to use. It can also backup & restore any Linux partitions on your system.

Is it possible to buy these LEDS for, example, HDD, FDD, etc? I'm trying to get a friend's PC's lights working as the wires have been sheared through. Thanks, David

    New Motherboard - Suggestions?

Thanks for taking the time and trouble to look things up for me, Big B - it is much appreciated! I'm looking towards the Gigabyte P965-DQS/DS3. It seems quiet impressive. However, I've just installed a new PSU Komplett.co.uk - Fortron/Source Powersupply ATX 400W Bulk, 120mm Fan, SATA...

Not quiet the overclock of the century!

I can increase the CPU clock in BIOS (and have done, from 133 MHz to 134MHz) However, any increase over 134 MHz results in lockup of the XP splash screen. I wanted to try and adjust the voltage in BIOS, but can't find any option listed. Is this what's called 'locked', maybe?

    New Motherboard - Suggestions?

I've been scouring the Net looking at motherboards to replace my 'elderly' mobo (see My Computer). Basically, want to achieve a processor speed of 3GHz and would slightly prefer to stick with Athlon (if they run to such a speed) - unless someone can offer a good reason to change. I'm not...

Not quiet the overclock of the century!

Well, my first attempt at overclocking has been a 'success' of sorts. I've gained a whole 0.1 GHz on my 2GHz Athlon XP 2400! I raised the Frequency Voltage Control in BIOS, from 133MHz to 134MHz. I did try 'one at a time' MHz increases, but the PC just froze-up at the XP splash screen. Is...

    New Build Advice Wanted.

Thinking of doing my first new build. I'm not into gaming, but want a resonably fast CPU (3GHz) and 2GBs of RAM. Could someone please offer suggestions for a full system setup. My budget will be around £500. Many thanks, David.

    Yet another RAM problem!

Thanks, OnStock. I'm starting think I'll have to go for a 1GB stick, but I'll try your suggestions. I recently updated the BIOS, so I guess that's not the problem. Oddly enough - I only have this RAM problem when I boot into XP Home - I can put sticks in both slots and have 768MB when I...
