    The Perpetual Upgrade Thread

Well, I've begun all my major upgrading by ordering most of my bits today ... yay! I've already got me an Antec Sonata case with my 'old' stuff in it. I'm hoping to have a quiet gaming PC ... hence, it'll be unlikely I'll be overclocking ... much! lol This is what it's gonna include: The...

    Enough power?

I've decided to go for a DFI LANParty UT NF4 Ultra-D board (more tweakage! Yay!) instead of the Gigabyte board. The rest of my setup is staying the same (although eventually getting 160GB SATA HDD). But I've heard good things about Tagen PSUs. I'm thinking of going for the Tagen 480w...

    Enough power?

Yes, Dabs and Komplett are very reasonable. I've also found out that amazon.co.uk is also surprisingly very good because I got the Sonata case for £67 instead of the usual £80, and free delivery! Overclockers.co.uk is also very good value and (if I'm not mistaken ... which I probably am!) they...

    Enough power?

Problem with Newegg is that they don't ship to the UK ... :( The good thing is that they post feedback on products!

    Enough power?

I've decided to buy the Sonata case and use the 380w PSU with my current system until I've saved up enough pennies to buy my new system. I'm guessing that the PSU should be adequate for now, seeing as how I've coped with a 350w PSU before! But when I get the new system, I'm investing in an...

    Enough power?

When I've finished saving my pennies, I'm going to invest in the following setup ... Antec Sonata case (w/ 380w PSU) Gigabyte GA-K8NXP-9 mobo AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (skt. 939) Geil value 1GB PC3200 dual channel kit Sapphire ATI Radeon X800 XL graphics (PCI-E) CD, DVD drive, DiamondMax 80GB...

    Basic home network

Seeing as how I'm now to both Linux and networking in general, it took me a day or so to figure it all out (I thought the GUI was accessed through the machine itself, not from another location!). But I've just swapped what I thought was gonna be my IPCop box with my mum's computer because my...

    Basic home network

Ignore that last post ... I found out that it was some crappy Compaq powersave thing!

    Basic home network

Got everything up and running ... eventually! I now have an IPCop dedicated machine sharing my connection out. But There's a problem. The IPCop machine boots ok and everything but after about 10 mins, the monitor goes blank and then a few mins after that, it switches the monitor off. But...

    improper speed

If my memory serves me correctly, it's suppost to be set at 133mhz FSB with 13.5 multiplier. I had a problem like this with a 2200. Turns out some jumpers on my motherboard were set to safe mode and it'll only allow itself to operate with 100mhz FSB, therefore a clock speed of 1350mhz.

    Basic home network

Got the computer. Tried to install Windows ... with no luck! First, it wouldn't acknowledge the HDD was there then when I finally got it to notice, when it goes through all the formatting and copying files, it restarts but instead of continuing, it goes right back to the beginning again! (just...

    Basic home network

I've heard of having a dual boot system where I could have Linux for security and Windows if my sister wants to use it. Would anyone like to point me in the direction of info about this? I've NEVER used Linux before (except once where I helped my ex with some Java assignments for uni) so I've...

    Basic home network

Basically, yes! I figured just buying an old PC would be cheaper and more useful than a router. I'm just gonna have that wired up to the net running Win2k and sharing it out. That IPCop looks good but a bit above my head considering my limited knowledge! I'll definately look into it though.

    Basic home network

I think I'm going to go with the server. I've got all the network cards/cables/monitor/etc so that's no worry. And where I'm living now, it's only going to be the two machines it'll be serving and the most it'll ever do is three. I could eventually get a bigger HDD and use it for more...

    Basic home network

I've been looking on eBay and I've seen refurbished Compaq PII 400 systems for £25 (128 RAM, CD-ROM, etc) and if I got one of these and loaded Windows 2000 on it, would this do the job just fine? Noise and size isn't really an issue because I can keep it downstairs and out of the way! I doubt...

    Basic home network

There's no ethernet on my modem. It's just the one my ISP sent me! It's RJ11 in and USB out ... that basic! I don't really want to spend more than £40 but I will go over that if that's what it takes. How much would an ASDL router with modem cost for a cheap one? I don't need anything flashy...

    Basic home network

Would you be able to recommend one to me? One with the lowest price tag! lol

    Basic home network

Could someone suggest to me a basic home networking system that's cheap and allows two computers to connect to the net independantly of each other? At the moment, I have an Alcatel Speedtouch modem (RJ11 in, USB out) and an ethernet cable from my built-in network card going downstairs to the...

    Building from scratch

I'm thinking of investing in a new mobo, CPU and mem (and case etc but that's irrelevent!). But I haven't built a system from scratch (only rebuilt my current system into a new case) before so I need to ask what may seem like a silly question! I still want to keep my HDD and fit it into the...
