7900gt runs worse then a 6600gt?

I just recently purchased a 7900gt 256mb card. While running games like BF2 or Everquest 2 the card seems to run the same if not worse on most settings. Im wondering if my PSU dosent have enough power for the card? I have tried reinstalling and upgrading drivers flashing the bios... im running outa options. The Problem lies in playing the games for a short period of time say 20 to 30 mins the textures get real funkey and start doing disco then it hangs followed by a system restart, as if the machine pressed reset all on its own.
The hottest the GPU got was around 58c that was running 3d mark the games it dosent go above 47c and it sits at 41c at idle. Im still very new to messing with high end pc parts any advice would help. Probibly more then xfx's tech support.

Sorry for the long post i was told by a friend to come here for help. If anyone can atleast help or shoot something i havent tried please. I Just need to figure out what i did wrong or if theres a problem with the card i definately do not see that piece of hard ware living up to the hype. Its Probily my own stupidity.
 
Try running the PC with the side off the case and a fan blowing into the machine if you have one. That should cool the card down a bit if its running hot.

Is the AGP aperature set to 256MB in the BIOS?

If your PSU isnt supplying enough power at 620W then nothing will!
 
Im Double Checking the PSU im almost positive that its more then enough juice.
It is a Pci-E 7900gt everything checks out in the bios (bios has been updated as well)
 
That PSU is more than sufficient, Enermax make some of the best units around and 620W is more than enough power.
 
Thats wonderful about the PSU. However im still trying to find out why the card performs roughly the same as a 6600gt pci-e card with a little more memory i cant really turn the settings up too much higher with this card without a huge performance cut. With the cut in performance take everquest2 for example i can play that on higher then medium settings and it runs only slightly better but after 30 to 45 mins the textures get all out of whack and then the system hangs. I have monitored the temprature and it dose not get hotter then 51c. As for the event log is that the event viewer in the MMC console?
 
You may have a bad card. I know for a fact eVGA has had some real issues with their 7900's, and I think XFX has too. eVGA has support forums you can visit to read-up on what I'm taking about... Lots of people are RMAing their 7900's (at least at eVGA). Evidently some 7900's have defective memory.

I just bought a PNY 7900GT and intentionally avoided eVGA and XFX cards because of what I've been reading.

I'm not sure if the prob's are limited to a couple of card-makers or to 7900's as a whole.

Just be aware...

BTW, I used to have a 6600GT as well, and believe me, you shouldn't be questioning the performance of your new 7900 compared to your old 6600, the difference is unquestionable.

Thank you sir and will do. Im still dealing with there tech support now and it is very annoying i get a response in 3 days if that... so terrible but i just hope i didnt waste 280 usd on a card i cannot take advantage of i bought performance but i got something that is sub par to my previous hardware. If i just needed more video memory i might as well have got the 256meg version of the 6600 series.
 
Just to reiterate what sswayne said, I used to have a 6600GT as well and I have a very similar system you you now exept i have the 7800GTX. I have seen a huge jump in performance and you should have as well.

Did you reinstall BF2 when you got your new card? I have seen mutterings on other forums that BF2 doent like the introduction of new hardware after the game has been installed.
 
Im to the point now where im going to format and reinstall everything and pray if that dosent work ive tried most everything else. I dont know what to do after this i just hope that xfx can do something if the card is indeed defective. i bought it no more then 4 weeks ago...
 
I don't think you need to do that just yet. I think you've just gotten a bad card, and I'd talk with XFX about it, especially considering it's brand new. Of course, if it's still within the return period from the store you got it at, you might try that first, since it could be a lot faster than waiting for an RMA.
 
Well i have already did a format and reinstall im in class again during this post. I did all the updates and drivers even direct x. If only i could get eq2 and fear to stop dieing on me and run decently i would be happy. But since i purchased this from newegg.com and like a moron i lost the invoice i printed im probibly going to have to rma.
 
Well after the format and a crapload of updates like usual.
That has fixed most of my video issues With the textures going nuts and crashing. Now just the performance is a major issue.
Dose anyone have any ideas? Xfx Told me it may be my mobo/cpu
im running an athalon 64 3000+ and the mobo is a msi K8NGM2 series.
Quake, Counter Strike basically my fps games run fine on really high settings.
But Fear and Everquest 2 Run like Poop. Espically Eq on Medium settings i get the same performance level as the 6600gt. Im outa troubleshooting ideas is there anything else i can try? I know its not a heat issue with high settings on all the games the most it gets up to is 46c. The peak temp was 58c on a 3dmark
with max settings.

If you RMA it with Newegg, yes. If you go through XFX, you won't. Check their website for details, as some companies want you to register your product online.
