Hello everyone! It's my first post! I have Acer TravelMate 803LMi notebook (official page of manufacturer, Notebook-->TravelMate-->TravelMate 8000). I upgraded the memory RAM to 2GB and all is OK with memory. My CD/DVD Reader/Writer doesn't work, it is destroyed. I have a IDE WD 160GB hard disk and for this reason I want to upgrade the hard disk of my notebook. I want to install in this new hard disk Windows XP Professional. I make a bootable USB stick (with Wintoflash) so as to boot my system from USB. I enter into BIOS (System BIOS Ver:4A17) and I go to Boot Tab and do this choice:
-Removable Device
-Hard Drive
-CD-ROM/DVD-ROM
-Boot to LAN
I save my settings but when the system reboot it doesn't boot from USB and try to boot from a server with the network card (specifically I take the message:
Broadcom UNDI, PXE-2.1 (build 082) v1.0.5a
Copyright (C) 2000-2003 Broadcom Corporation
Copyright (C) 1997-2000 Intel Corporation
All rights reserved.
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Broadcom PXE ROM
Operating System not found)
I go to Info Tab at BIOS and I see that BIOS has recognized the new hard disk. It says:
HDD1 Model Name: WDC WD1600BEVE-00UYT0
HDD1 Serial Number: WD-........
System BIOS Ver: 4A17
Would do you inform me if my motherboard and bios in my notebook support the boot from USB stick? I understand that one solution will be to buy an external CD/DVD drive for installing Windows XP in my new hard disk but I will choice this solution if it is the final.
P.S. I am afraid to update my BIOS because ACER says that "Updating an incorrect BIOS may cause harm to your system. We recommend that you only do this after being instructed by one of our Customer Care representatives. By using these updates you agree to accept the possibility of product failure." Do you know if the updating of BIOS can add new feature in my BIOS so as to contain the choice for booting my system from USB stick?
