beeps on (non) startup

I would be very grateful if someone can help me with what i hope is not a terminal problem.
i have a compaq presario sr1719uk machine
which has (apparently) a msi 7184 motherboard, athlon 64 34004 processor, running on windows xp home edition.
I dont use this machine very much, mainly for storage etc. it is about 3 or 4 years old, i have had a few "blue screen" errors but machine seemed fine after rebooting.
However i tried to start the pc this morning after it had stood idle but plugged in for about 3 weeks and got only beeps from it.
I have tried restarting the machine with all the usb gadgets removed but no difference.
The beeps start immediately i switch on, there is no signal to the monitor, the dvd drive lights up.
the beeps are about 1 second long with a 2 second interval between them.
I would appreciate any help anyone could offer but i must be honest my computer knowledge is very limited - to me they will always be magic boxes.
I'm worried that I may have lost all my music and all my photographs:(
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Hi, your machine isn't posting, try resetting the cmos to start off with, if it still doesn't post it's a problem with the following: motherboard, cpu, ram, graphics card, power supply unit and in some cases cpu fan. so you will have to go through one by one ruling them out prefferably startin with ram.
