Big Problem...

Today I bought a new heatsink for my computer to replace the stock heatsink. When i got home, I installed it, hooked everything back up, and it worked fine. Then I realized that my temp. gauge wasn't placed in the right spot, so it wasn;t getting the right temp of the CPU. So I took the heatsink off, then placed the thermometer inbetween the processor and the heatsink. So then I turn my computer on and a few seconds later I start getting this anoying beeping, warning sound. So after a bit of confusion I took the thermometer out from between the heatsink and CPU and put it alongside the the CPU so it wasn't touching it. I turned it on and it was ok. But now the thermometer is getting a whole bunch of different readings, jumping all over the place. So then I tryed putting the therm. right on the egde of the CPU and put the heatsink back on and turned it on, and i got that same beeping warning noise. so i was quick to take it back out and then place the therm slightly underneath the clip that holds the CPU in place. And as of now when i try to turn my computer on all that happens is i get a flicker from the fan lights, and the fans try to run but my computer fails to start up. So needless to say i feel like a complete idiot... and to my best geuss i think it's either the power supply or processor. i'm leaning more twards the CPU though. I probably shorted something out... :( I've still got the 3 year warrenty on my CPU so i can try and get it replaced.
Anyone got any idea as to what's up. I'm going to try and check things out tommorow after school, but I don't have any way of really knowing.

and just for referense i did build my system myself a year ago. no problems until now.
 
Just out of curiosity, why are you using an external thermometer when most modern boards have got at least one temp reader, normally for the CPU? As for starting your computer – Disconnect the external thermometer and take it out completely. Try again and see if you are getting any beeps (POST). If you get nothing, you need to try the barebones approach to try and narrow the range of possible causes. What CPU are using? What PSU are you using? Try and post the as much details about your system as possible and hopefully the forum can point you in the right direction.
 
You should never put an object between the CPU and heatsink! :x:
You can say bye-bye to your processor if you leave it like that
 
The external thermometer is part of my case. There's a temp display on the from of the case. As far as narrowing the problem, I think it's the processor. I'm going to get in tuch with intel and see if I can replace my CPU. I'm running a Pentium 4 @ 3.0GHz w/ HT. my power supply came with the case: AspireUSA X-Super Alien.

ok, so here's the deal. today i took everything apart, took the CPU out and cleaned off the thermal paste. then I put everything back together, put the CPU in and then put the heatsink on (no thermal paste was allpied at this point). started the computer up and it ran fine again. so i figured it wouldn't hurt if i went ahead and put the thermal paste on. so i took the processor of and spread the paste around thinly then put it back. same thing happened as before. all i got was a flicker of the fan LEDs and nothing else. so it has something to do with the processor. my friend thinks it could be the mobo, but i don't think so.
so... time for a new processor? any ideas?
