Overclockers UK have already listed a new Blu-Ray drive a few weeks in advance from it's release.
The Pioneer BDR-101A Blu-ray Disc/DVD writer is expected to revolutionize digital and high-definition media storage. The BDR-101A allows professional users to test & author high-definition Blu-ray Disc content while also delivering the ability for high-capacity data storage. The drive can read BD-ROM discs, read/write single layer BD-R & BD-RE discs, read DVD-ROM, and read/write most DVD recordable media formats.
From what i can see, it writes most formats except DVD- R/RW discs.
If you have £579.95 to spare, go for it. So that's roughly $1400AU and $1091USD.I think i'll wait a few months until the prices come down a bit.
You can see it here.

OMG! I can buy the whole PC in this price with LCD monitor...... Never in my whole life if this will be the price.......I'l better go for PS3 with HD DVD~!

Do you think your uncle would go for it Nic:)
I personally wouldn't bother with the player, might as well get a PS3 and have some multifunctionality going on.

I'll just wait for PS3, and till then my ps2 and DVD will suffice, i don't need all that hi-def, my eyes don't know what they're missing, and my wallet thanks me for it.

Hehe yeah.
Unless you've got a High-Def Screen for the whole High-Def media thing then I don't see the point. And that much money for a drive.... pfft I think not.
*EDIT: pelvis_3 they do write DVD-R and DVD-RW Discs, the DVD-R is next to the DVD+R and the DVD-RW is next to the DVD+RW :P*
