Building a new PC ....

I'm about to build a new PC. Im thinking of getting this configuration :

Motherboard : Gigabyte K8NS 754 Motherboard ,8 Channel Audio, SATA, 64 Bit
CPU : AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Socket 754 ,512Kb Cache & Winchester Core
RAM: 512 Mb PC400 Corsair DDR Memory
Graphics : ATI Radeon 9600 XT
HDD:200Gb 7200rpm 8Mb Buffer Maxtor SATA Hard Drive

This system will be controlled by WinXP PRO and be used for some basic photoediting, some games like NFS 2 and internet browsing!

In Malta PC hardware is very expensive when compared to USA or UK . The above cost about USD $770 !! and i still have to get a case, monitor , optical drivers, input devices etc...

Do you think that the above combination will work ok? Should I change something ?
 
it should work fine, but maybe a 939 system would be more future proof? I'd suggest getting a Samung HD rather than the maxtor.

btw: sorry about the slow reply, i'm sure others will post is well.
 
The 3000+ is fine, but go with a sockey 939 if you can.
The RAM, is it DDR400 or PC4000 ? If it's DDr400 it's fine, if it'S PC4000 then it's too much and you should go with PC3200 instead (which is DDr400).
I'd go with a Western Digital HDD but it's just a preference and the Maxtor will be fine too.
 
In the long run, you're going to have more flexibility with S939, so while it may be a bit more now, down the line you should be able to snag a dual-core Athlon and drop it in after updating the BIOS. With S754, you're buying the budget platform socket, which pretty much means Sempron city for you as the Athlon64's look to only go up to 3400+ speeds.

I'd also suggest looking at PCIe (PCI Express) in a motherboard. AGP is on it's way out, which would limit your upgrade path down the road.
 
My applications are not that cpu / graphic intensive. I think the system that I have in my mind will give me good performance for a 4 year life span.

Socket 939 mobo and cpu are still too expensive cause they hit the shores recently.
