I understand what you mean. Probably the best implementation in a stock kernel I've ever seen is in newer Knoppix/Overclockix/Ubuntu/other-Debian-based distros. It's just like having a native Linux filesystem, if you set the partition to mount as R/W.
I don't mind Debian Distros - their quite good, but i have to say i bloody hate Knoppix : / *spits* Urgh! - really not my cup of tea. I'm currently waiting to get some time on my hands as i'm going to install Yoper.
Try Overclockix, a custom-built Knoppix distro. You may be pleasantly surprised! Hint: run with the kernel options knoppix26 dma for best performance
