Celeron D VS. Pentium 4. Which should I choose?

MrWaffles

I have the choice of using the current Processor I'm using(Intel Celeron D, 3.06 GHz) or an Intel Pentium 4 1.80 GHz processor. Which one should I use? I use my computer for gaming a lot, and I play games like World of Warcraft, Counter-Strike: Source, Oblivion, Need for Speed Carbon, etc. Which of the two CPU's would be best for me?

The Celeron D is about 2 years old, and the Pentium 4 is probobly 4-5 years old.

Hey, Welcome to hardwareforums MrWaffles!

Pentium 4 1.8 (released July/August 2001)
  • Clockspeed:1800 MHz
  • Front Side Bus: 400 MT/s , 800Mhz (?)
  • L2 Cache: 256 KiB
  • Supports SSE1 & 2

Celeron 345, 345j or 346 (released November/October 2004)
  • Clockspeed: 3066 MHz (1.26 Ghz Faster than the Pentium)
  • Front Side Bus: 533 MT/s , 1066 MHz (?) (266 MHz faster)
  • L2 Cache: 256 KiB (equal)
  • Supports SSE1, 2 & 3 (The Pentium does not support SSE3)

I would use the Celeron :)

PS MT/s stands for MegaTransfers a second. 1 MT/s = one million transfers per second. In your system, i *think* 1 MT/s = 2 Mhz! Hence why the FSB speeds in MHz are marked (?)

Was it a Xmas present by any chance? :P

Thanks for the info. ^^

And no, it wasn't a Christmas present, I found it in one of my old computers in my garage.

How much do you think a new Pentium 4 socket 478 would be in US dollars?

I would have a look around on ebay and the US Retails listed HERE , or you could go about it another way.

buy yourself a case, motherboard, RAM and hard disc! and you've got yourself a machine that would make a nice server! :P

unfortunately, If you where looking to sell it here (In the Buy / Sell / Trade) Forums you would have to hang around for awhile (you need 50 posts for access, and spamming gets you banned :P). It would be great to see another regular member though :)

Yeah, I'll look around Ebay and that site you gave me, I really need a new processor lol. I have bought myself a new case, a new video card, 2 new moniters, a new motherboard, a new heatsink, 1gb of ram, a new powersupply, new fans, new wires, a new CD/DVD RW drive, and a new 200gb 7200 rpm hard drive. I put them all together myself(w00t for me) and now I just need a new processor lol.

Mine is too old and crappy to sell most likely, though.
Thanks for the links though. :chk:
I will probably be sticking around these forums hehe.

Also:

Thanks :D, your name is pretty cool too. ^^
(You have to teach me how to do that Offtopic box lol.)

You can find a summery of vB code HERE

If the P4 is skt 478 it could be both the Willamette or the Northwood. Both had a 400mhz FSB, the northwood had 512kb L2 cache. Most of the northwoods will overclock to 2.4ghz too. The 1.8 Northwood was a popular processor because it was cheap and a good overclocker.

The Celly is surely faster.
